Human Resources Introducing New Technology Improvements on Campus

Over the last school year, Human Resources has been working diligently to update their technology in order to make things more efficient for you. Some of the highlights of these upgrades are explained below.

Banner 9 and Banner Revitalization

Starting December 31, 2018 our current version of Banner will no longer be supported by the vendor. In preparation for that, we have been transitioning from Banner 8 to Banner 9, which provides powerful unique capabilities that have a fresh look and feel for the end user and provide automated workflow between business units. We have also be revitalizing the way that we currently use Banner in order to take advantage of the unique features it offers.

Human Resources has been introducing many new features in Banner, and has accomplished numerous things with the help of Strata Information Group (SIG), and highlights are listed below. Two significant items include Online Leave Reporting and the New Employment Application System.

Online Leave Reporting

In March, Human Resources introduced electronic Leave Reporting, which eliminated the grey time card process for salaried employees. As a part of this new process, salaried employees must submit a leave record every pay period, even if they are submitting zero hours off in that period. They now enter their time off (i.e. vacation, sick, bereavement, jury duty) in Banner, and once their managers approve the time, it is automatically subtracted from the appropriate leave bank.

This improvement automated the current paper-based submission process and has increased the accuracy and accountability for recording time off.

New Employment Application System

Human Resources, in partnership with AIT, selected a new employment application system, called Newton. With Newton, Wheaton College can streamline the process of attracting, engaging, interviewing, and hiring new employees. The easy-to-use web interface enables applicants to apply for the position of their choice, upload necessary supporting documents, and be electronically routed to hiring participants.

This provides you with greater hiring efficiency, increased automation, and improved communication.

In addition, Human Resources has:

  • Implemented the new Employee Dashboard for Banner Self Service, making employee access to data more accessible
  • Cleaned up existing e-classes and retired obsolete e-classes to enable more accurate reporting
  • Created new Benefit categories (Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze) for Full and Part-Time employees, which enables improved tracking and reporting
  • Began configuring Auto Overtime, which will reduce manual intervention during payroll processing
