ESL Workshop Descriptions
One-Day Workshops for ESL Teachers
Our One-Day Workshops include Basics 101, 102, and 103 which may be combined toward the 30-hour ROWE ESL teaching certificate, as well as two elective workshops. Typically, Basics 101 and an elective workshop are offered each fall, while Basics 102 & 103 are offered each spring.
Fall 2023 Workshops:
Basics of ESL Teaching 101—Saturday, October 21, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. CDT
This workshop provides a strong foundation for effective ESL teaching. It focuses on both key fundamental principles of teaching and learning a language as well as practical aspects such as needs analysis and lesson planning. It can be combined with two other workshops (Basics 102 & Basics 103--offered in the spring) for a 30-hour Reach Out with English (ROWE) certificate.
Essentials of Teaching ESL One-to-One 402—Saturday, November 4, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. CDT
This elective, stand-alone workshop focuses on key issues related to best practices when it comes to teaching ESL to individual learners. In addition, we will explore how to best assist learners as they seek to increase their English proficiency. Finally, we will identify sound principles and logistical considerations when structuring tutoring regardless of whether it's in a volunteer or paid business setting.
Cost of one-day workshops: $95 (early registration); $115 (late registration)
Special Rates: $45 (for those taking the workshop again; also applies to past ROWE participants taking any Basics courses); $55 (current Wheaton College undergraduate and graduate students)
Additional discounts (only apply to those paying $95 or $115 rate): $10 discount per workshop if registering for both workshops in a semester; $10 discount per person for groups of 3 or more from one organization/church

We will be in touch soon after we receive your registration form with additional information.
"There is nothing 'basic' about Basics 103. I learned more in one day than I did in whole semesters of methods classes in college. I wish I had taken this course sooner. I learned so much that will help me serve learners better."
