Intern at the US Department of Education in the Office of Planning, Evaluation, and Policy Development
Abigail spent a summer interning at the US Department of Education in the Office of Planning, Evaluation, and Policy Development (OPEPD – IO). She and two fellow interns worked with a small group of fiercely dedicated senior policy advisors, assisting with a variety of short- and long-term projects. Abigail's work ranged from conducting research to attending Senate committee hearings to creating funding spreadsheets, and it covered topics from fiscal policy to child development.
"The office was up-beat and very fast-paced, and interns received substantive assignments much earlier than I expected. While somewhat overwhelming at first, the whirlwind was a complete thrill. Whether at committee meetings or at Starbucks, I genuinely enjoyed the time I spent with the staff. I learned about the Department’s priorities, the current state of federal education policy, emerging issues in the broader field of education, and the policy development process. I also benefited just from listening to staffers' stories. I found encouragement in their diverse backgrounds and was affirmed in my own desire to work in education policy development in the future.”
