Internships for Physics Students

The Physics and Engineering Department encourages physics students to pursue internships to expand and enhance their understanding of the broad applications of their education and to build vocational experience. We actively partner with the Wheaton College Center for Vocation and Career to support students as they pursue and engage in internships.

Here are just a few of the recent internships our students have pursued.

Rachel Barron ’21

Abbott Labs

Rachel Barron (Physics ’21) completed Abbott Labs’ IT internship program in the Cybersecurity department in Chicago. Abbott Labs is a medical technology company that focuses on engaging their communities and creating innovative medical solutions. The Cybersecurity department is focused on protecting Abbott's business, products, and patient data. Rachel worked on process improvement and developing automated metrics to detect and categorize Cyber threats.

Aside from technical projects, a major aspect of the internship was the opportunity to develop in becoming a community leader: becoming someone who creates community between fellow interns and invests in relationships with other Abbott employees. This was particularly challenging since the interns were remote but, it provided a unique opportunity to develop community with interns and Abbott employees across the globe.

Aleks Nosewicz ’20

Hanley Flight & Zimmerman LLC

Aleks Nosewicz (Physics ‘20) worked in an internship for Hanley Flight & Zimmerman (HFZ) LLC in their patent law office in Chicago. HFZ is a patent law firm that covers licensing (acceptance of patent applications), prosecution (enforcement of patents), and litigation (legal challenges to patents). He worked in the HFZ electrical engineering division, where he helped prepare licensing documents to support inventors seeking to patent their ideas
