Language Placement Testing

Placement tests help place you in the appropriate language class. These tests do not exempt you from taking classes nor do they give you credit. They are a guide to help you get into the right level and are required at Wheaton. We offer placement tests in French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish. The best class for you can be determined by following these steps:

1. Register over the summer

Modern Languages

  • Register for a 101 Elementary I class if you will be learning a new language or pursuing a language you studied for one year or less in high school; or continuing with a language you have studied independently outside of a traditional classroom before now.
  • Register for a 103 Accelerated Elementary class if you have had 2 years of the target language in high school.
  • Register for a 201 Intermediate class if you have had 3-4 years of the target language in high school. A mandatory placement test is required prior to your first day of class. See below for information.

Classical Languages

  • Register for a 101 Elementary I class if you will be learning a new language or pursuing a language you studied for one year or less in high school; or continuing with a language you have studied independently outside of a traditional classroom before now.
  • For all other placements, please consult with Dr. Doug Penney. If you have had 2 years or more of a classical language in high school, you will either take a placement exam or 201.

2. Take a language placement test prior to the first day of class.

Placement tests confirm that you are placed in the correct class. Test costs are listed below. Click on a link below when you are ready to take the test. Placement tests are required for students who took 3-4 years of a modern language in high school.

Modern Languages

  • French - $10 if taken during summer, $20 if taken once classes begin.
  • German - $10 if taken during summer, $20 if taken once classes begin.
  • Mandarin Chinese - $20. Contact Ian Roseen with your name, Wheaton email address, and Wheaton College ID number.

Test instructions will be emailed to you upon submitting your online registration form. If you do not receive instructions after 24 hours, do not register again as you will be charged a second registration fee. Classical Languages

Placement Tests in Greek, Hebrew, and Latin are $20 and held on-campus at the beginning of each academic semester (August 21, 2020) or on Reading Day. You must register at least two business days prior to the test date to reserve a spot, by contacting the following:

  • Greek or Hebrew – contact Dr. Doug Penney with your name, Wheaton email address, and Wheaton College ID number.
  • Latin – contact Dr. Alexander Loney with your name, Wheaton email address, and Wheaton College ID number.

3.  Placement Test FAQs

  • Placement Test results expire after one year. You are strongly encouraged to register for a language class within a year of taking the Placement Test to avoid incurring another fee to re-take the test at a later date.
  • Placement Test registration credentials expire at the end of the semester.

You may take a placement test in more than one language but you will need to fill out a separate registration form for each language.
