Language Placement Testing

Placement tests help place you in the appropriate language class. These tests do not exempt you from taking classes nor do they give you credit. They are a guide to help you get into the right level and are required at Wheaton. We offer placement tests in French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish. The best class for you can be determined by following these steps:

Modern Languages Placement Tests

  • Register for a 101 Elementary I class if you will be learning a new language or pursuing a language you studied for one year or less in high school; or continuing with a language you have studied independently outside of a traditional classroom before now.

Classical Languages Placement Tests

  • Register for a 101 Elementary I class if you will be learning a new language or pursuing a language you studied for one year or less in high school; or continuing with a language you have studied independently outside of a traditional classroom before now.
  • For all other placements, please consult with Dr. Alexander Loney. If you have had 2 years or more of a classical language in high school, you will either take a placement exam or 201.
