Middle-Grade Language Arts
Elementary Education
Any elementary teacher candidate applying for an initial Illinois Professional Educator License and seeking a subsequent middle-grade English Language Arts endorsement to be added to the license will need to
- complete18 semester hours of approved language arts-related coursework at Wheaton, including EDUC 214 Books for the Middle-School Reader and ENG 325 Methods of Teaching Middle-School English Language Arts. (Wheaton elementary education majors will automatically have completed the other 14 credits needed for this endorsement as part of the education major and their Christ at the Core curriculum).
- pass the state's middle-level English Language Arts content exam. This is in addition to the passing the elementary content exam.
- complete a Wheaton-approved practicum in a middle school.
Any English Language Arts course counted toward the middle-grade endorsement must have a final grade of C- or higher.
Secondary Education
Secondary Education students who are also English majors will automatically receive the middle-grade English Language Arts endorsement as part of their program; however, they will need to pass the state middle-level English Language Arts content exam.
