Middle-Grade Mathematics
Elementary Education
Any elementary teacher candidate applying for an initial Illinois Professional Educator license and seeking a subsequent middle-grade mathematics endorsement to be added to the license will need to
- complete 18 semester hours of approved mathematics-related coursework including the 2-credit course MATH 325 Methods of Teaching Middle-Grade Mathematics. (Wheaton elementary education majors will automatically have completed 8 credits toward the endorsement by completing required courses MATH 125 and EDUC 315).
- pass the state’s middle-level mathematics content exam. This is in addition to passing the elementary content exam.
- complete a Wheaton-approved practicum in a middle school.
Any mathematics course counted toward the middle-grade endorsement must have a final grade of C- or higher.
Secondary Education
Secondary Education students who are also mathematics majors will automatically receive the middle-grade mathematics endorsement as part of their program; however, they will need to pass the state’s middle-level mathematics content exam.
