The Batson Shakespeare Society sponsors a variety of activities on campus, including panels, exhibits, lectures, performances, and readings. Details about upcoming events are below. These events are open to the public and welcome all Shakespeare enthusiasts. Please contact the Shakespeare Society at shakespeare.society@wheaton.edu for more information about any of our events or activities. 

Upcoming Schedule of Activities

Spring 2024

  • Shakespeare Movie Night. Tuesday, February 13, 7:00 pm in Barrows Auditorium, Billy Graham Hall. Join the Batson Shakespeare Society for a viewing of the 2000 Miramax Films adaptation of William Shakespeare comedy Love's Labour's Lost, directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Alicia Silverstone. Members of the community are welcome to attend. Movie snacks provided! 
  • E. Beatrice Batson Lecture Series. Thursday, March 21, 7:00 pm in the Bakke Auditorium, Wade Center. Dr. David Urban, Professor of English at Calvin University, will deliver the annual Batson lecture, "Transcending Justice, Transcending Human Control: Overarching Providence in Shakespeare's Comedies and Romances." Members of the community are welcome to attend.
  • Batson Essay Contest. This contest recognizes outstanding research papers about Shakespeare and Christianity written by Wheaton College undergraduate students. Deadline submission is April 29, 2024 at midnight. 

Fall 2024

  • Sonnets and Cider. September, date TBD. Join fellow Shakespeare enthusiasts for a fireside poetry reading. Cider, s'mores, and sonnets provided.
  • Fall Shakespeare Lecture. Dr. Benjamin Weber will present the Fall Shakespeare Lecture, "Lunatics, Lovers, and Poets: Shakespeare's Images of Transcendence." More information forthcoming.
