His Own Received Him Not: Jimmy Carter, the Religious Right, and the Eclipse of Progressive Evangelicalism
Dr. Randall Balmer is The Dartmouth Professor in the Arts and Sciences Chair of the Department of Religion and Director of the Society of Fellows. Dr. Balmer will be lecturing on his most recent book, “Redeemer: The Life of Jimmy Carter,” This is the first biography of the thirty-ninth president to take his faith seriously as a way of understanding Carter's career and the religious context in which he lived which included the rise of the Religious Right. Dr. Balmer has published in both scholarly journals and in the popular press. His op-ed articles have appeared in newspapers across the country and he is regularly asked to comment on religion and American life. He has appeared frequently on network television, NPR, The Colbert Report and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
Dr. Balmer has published more than a dozen books, including Redeemer: The Life of Jimmy Carter and The Making of Evangelicalism: From Revivalism to Politics and Beyond. His second book, Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory: A Journey into the Evangelical Subculture in America, now in its fourth edition, was made into an award-winning, three-part documentary for PBS. Dr. Balmer wrote and hosted that series as well as a two-part series on creationism and a documentary on Billy Graham.
