Tower Bell Ringing Policy
The ringing of the Tower Bell in Blanchard Hall is one of Wheaton College’s most cherished traditions. Rooted in decades of campus history, this symbolic act celebrates and publicly announces the engagements and weddings of Wheaton students and alumni. The sound of the bell signals a moment of joy shared by the entire College community, reminding us of the covenantal nature of Christian marriage and the enduring bonds formed within the Wheaton family.
Eligibility and Purpose
The Tower Bell may be rung only to celebrate engagements or weddings involving at least one current student or alum of Wheaton College consistent with the Community Covenant.
Each ringing serves as a community-wide celebration, inviting the campus to rejoice in a milestone that reflects our values of covenant and joy in Christ.
Scheduling and Reservation Process
To maintain the integrity of this tradition and ensure appropriate coordination:
Advance Registration
All bell ringing must be scheduled at least three (3) business days in advance through the Student Involvement Office.
Authorized Use
Only those with a confirmed reservation are permitted to access the bell. Spontaneous or unsanctioned use is prohibited.
Supervised Access
Access to the Tower Bell will be facilitated by designated College personnel at the reserved time to ensure safety and proper use.
Community Expectations
The Tower Bell is a sacred symbol of celebration, not to be used for pranks, protest, or purposes unrelated to current student or alumni engagement or marriage celebrations. Those ringing the bell are expected to do so with respect and reverence for the tradition and the shared life of the Wheaton community.
