Sunday Activities Policy

Wheaton College affirms the biblical imperative to “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy” (Exodus 20:8). In light of this, all campus activities scheduled on Sundays must reflect the spirit of Sabbath rest, worship, and spiritual renewal.

Policy Overview

Sunday Morning

No events or activities—academic, athletic, or co-curricular—will be scheduled on Sunday mornings in order to prioritize and protect community-wide participation in local church worship.

Permissible Activities

Only events that are explicitly worship-oriented or spiritual in nature (e.g., prayer gatherings, fellowship gatherings over a meal, worship services, spiritual retreats, or discipleship groups) may be scheduled on Sundays.

Event Approval

All proposed Sunday activities for students that require a campus space reservation must be reviewed and approved by the Dean for Student Engagement to ensure alignment with the purpose and spirit of this policy.

Theological and Community Rationale

This policy reflects Wheaton College’s commitment to:

  • Honoring the Lord’s Day as a time set apart for worship, fellowship, rest, and renewal;
  • Encouraging active participation in the life of a local church, which we affirm as a vital expression of Christian discipleship; and
  • Upholding the Sabbath as a gift of grace, grounded not in legalism but in Christian freedom and personal responsibility.

As a residential academic community, we acknowledge that some essential services (e.g. security, dining, emergency response) must continue. Even so, the overall posture of the campus on Sundays should reflect a departure from “business as usual” and an intentional rhythm of rest and worship.
