Roommate Responsibilities and Expectations
As members of a covenantal Christian community, roommates commit to treating one another with love, respect, humility, and consideration (Philippians 2:3-4; Romans 12:10). Every resident can reasonably expect the following from their roommates:
- Support of rest, study, as well as personal health and wellness.
- Respect for personal property by asking for permission before using.
- Shared responsibility for maintaining a clean and functional living space.
- Accessible living environment, free from intimidation, harassment, threats, or any behavior that undermines personal safety and dignity.
- Appropriate privacy by respecting personal boundaries.
- A commitment to face-to-face communication that is quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger (James 1:19) as well as a commitment to address concerns and conflicts in a Christ-centered manner that seeks understanding, reconciliation, and mutual respect, while genuinely considering the needs and interests of others alongside one’s own (Philippians 2:4).
- To host guests in accordance with Wheaton College policies and with consideration for roommate(s).
Roommates should be prepared to experience some unmet expectations, with a readiness and willingness to communicate and resolve concerns as they arise. Residence Life encourages students to follow the Roommate Conflict Policy as a guide to address concerns and stay connected. Timing is important; letting unmet expectations linger will grow negative feelings over time. Residence Directors, Graduate Resident Advisors, and Resident Assistants are available as support resources.
