Use of personal digital cameras may only be done on-site at the Wade Center with approval by archival staff and in accordance with our reproduction policies as follows:
There is no fee for digital copying.
- Digital copying from published works is welcome, provided the extent is a select portion of the complete work and adheres to copyright law. We recommend 20% or less, or about a chapter length per book.
- The citations for all digital copies must be recorded on our Digital Copying form and, once complete, left with the Wade Center's archival staff.
- Permission for reproduction of copyrighted material in unpublished formats must be obtained by the Wade Center's directors and the appropriate copyright holder before taking photos. Note, copy requests for these materials are restricted to 20% of the manuscript, folder, volume, or annotated pages therein and limited to no more than 100 pages for the total copy request. This applies to the Wade Center's collections in unpublished formats such as archival, letter, and manuscript collections, as well as annotations by the Wade authors in their personal library books. Since knowing which materials will be most useful to research is challenging before examining them, we recommend waiting until after you have reviewed the materials before making requests for digital or physical copies from our directors and the respective copyright holders.
- Transcription of content for personal research use (via typing or handwriting) is welcomed for all materials, particularly those for which photography restrictions apply.
- When contacting copyright holders for copying or quoting permissions:
- A copy of the letter of permission must be deposited at the Wade Center prior to making copies.
- Note that in addition to copying, permission is also needed for directly quoting from copyrighted materials in a publication, including web posting and recorded/livestreamed presentations as well as digital or print sources.
- Contact the Wade Center prior to publication of materials from our collections. Publication of all such material must include proper citation of the Wade Center as owner of this material.
- See our Guide to contacting Wade Author Estates for contact information and additional tips on how to request copying or quoting permissions.
- Images must not be duplicated, distributed, made available to any other person or institution, or deposited in another library or archive without written permission from the Wade Center. Images of collection materials must be destroyed once they are no longer needed.
- Images are for research and study use of the requestor only.
- The Marion E. Wade Center reserves the right to withhold permission for the reproduction of any material in its possession.
