October 2016

From the President

Philip Ryken, President of Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL

Dear Parents,

At Homecoming last weekend we enjoyed the friendship of returning alumni, the excitement of athletic competition, and the majesty of symphonic music in the beautiful Midwest fall weather.

In a moving address to students at Homecoming Chapel, Lisa Beamer '91 spoke of the value of friendship with Wheaton friends gathered for their 25th reunion. A Wheaton mom who has raised three children as a single parent since her husband Todd ’91 was killed 15 years ago in the 9/11 attacks on America, Lisa shared her difficult lessons of faith as a treasured but vulnerable child of God.

The College also honored Harold “Mac” Airhart ’61 as its Alumnus of the Year for Distinguished Service to Alma Mater. A great-great grandson of Wheaton’s founder and first president Jonathan Blanchard, “Mac” served on Wheaton’s Board of Trustees for a quarter century, 1990-2016. A real estate builder and developer in Chicago’s western suburbs since 1966, he has helped increase the College’s land area by 28 percent, and nearly 50 percent of the campus buildings that your student enjoys were constructed or renovated with his encouragement and oversight.

We are grateful for the witness of Lisa Beamer and Mac Airhart, who both exemplify the Kingdom values we pray will be developed in all our alumni.

In Christ’s service,

Philip Ryken

Important Update from Financial Aid

The 2017-18 FAFSA is now available!

The 2017-18 FAFSA became available on October 1, which is several months earlier than in the past. It will utilize 2015 income tax information, which is intended to streamline the process for many students and their families. The 2017-18 Wheaton institutional financial aid application is also available. Both applications are available on the financial aid web site and have a priority deadline of March 15, 2017 for continuing students.

We encourage students from Illinois to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible since the Illinois MAP Grant is awarded based on the FAFSA filing date and has shortfalls in funding each year.

We recommend FAFSA completion by November 15.  Please contact the Financial Aid office with any questions.

Alumni Association Student Scholarships

Photo of students talking over a mealEvery year, the Alumni Association Board of Directors awards merit scholarships to a select number of juniors for their senior year. Applications are available online or in the Student Development office, SSB 218. Completed applications must be returned by Friday, October 28, 2016, to the Alumni and Parent Engagement office. Award winners will be announced at spring Convocation. Applicants will be chosen on the basis of academic achievement, campus/community involvement, spiritual growth, understanding of life mission, and future plans.

Electronic Student Account Billing

Fall 2016 tuition was due on August 24.

The new Student Billing and Payment Gateway has been available since July 20, 2016. There are still many students that have not yet logged in to access their account information, set up Authorized Users, or viewed their e-statements.

The Student Billing and Payment Gateway is not the same as Banner Proxy. Students must set up parents as Authorized Users through the new Gateway even if they have access to Banner Proxy.

Federal regulations prohibit us from sharing account information with anyone not authorized by the student. Full login instructions were emailed to students on July 20 and are also available on the Student Accounts page.

Please encourage your student(s) to watch for and read all email notifications from Student Accounts. Parents who have been authorized will receive emails at their designated email address.

Student Care and Services

All new Wheaton College students have been informed about the Student Care and Services team available to assist with their medical, mental health, or academic needs. We encourage you to watch this welcome video and learn more about the services available.

News from the Wheaton Conservatory of Music

Wheaton College Conservatory of MusicThe first few weeks of school have given students in the Conservatory of Music opportunities to engage in a wide variety of performance, outreach, and musical expression.  More than 4000 school-aged students were able to attend and enjoy one of two children’s concerts given by the Symphony Orchestra in Edman Chapel.  In addition, the orchestra performed an All American concert on October 8.  The Concert Choir spent a recent weekend in Chicago performing, engaging in ministry, and reaching into various settings with musical offerings.  Men’s Glee Club performed the National Anthem for the Chicago Fire Soccer game and the Women’s Chorale enjoyed their Fall Tea on September 22.

For a list of upcoming performance check out our calendar of music events.

Opening in November, 2017, a newly-renovated Armerding Hall will be the home of the Wheaton Conservatory of Music.  Located near the center of campus, the new Conservatory of Music building will offer conservatory students an exciting new venue for classes, musical studies, practice, and performance.  All students on campus will enjoy the opportunity to stop by to play piano, gather with friends, or to encourage a friend involved in a performance.   Celebration of the commencement of construction took place on October 13, 2016.

News from HoneyRock

Two upcoming information sessions will give you and your student a chance to learn about valuable educational opportunities at HoneyRock, Wheaton's Outdoor Center for Leadership Development.

Learn and Earn this Summer

Students can earn four general education credit hours through HoneyRock's Summer 2016 General Education Program. Wheaton's Summer Leadership School offers students the opportunity to develop core leadership competencies through training and ministry as a summer camp counselor. Participants in the Leadership Schools are paid and scholarships are available. Learn more at our information session during Family Weekend on Saturday, November 12.

Benefits of Taking a Gap Year

Did you know that students who take a gap year before entering college are more motivated, carry higher GPAs, and assume more leadership positions once on a college campus? Come hear more about the value of a gap year and receive information about Wheaton College's own Vanguard Gap Year Program. Participants can receive referrals for acceptance to Wheaton College. A Vanguard informational meeting will be held on Thursday, November 10. To learn more and to register to attend, visit our web site.

How can you pray for Wheaton this month?

  • Give thanks for the Lord's grace and faithfulness in seeing us through the first quarter of the school year.
  • Pray for our athletic teams and for students in Performing Arts during this busy season.  Pray that these students will remain healthy, that they will find fun and encouragement with peers, and that the exercise of their gifts will bring great joy.
  • Pray for our students as they travel, play, and rest during Fall Break.  Pray for their safety and rejuvenation, and for the service opportunities in which many students will engage.
  • Pray for preparations underway for Family Weekend on November 11-12.  Pray for safe travel and encouraging connections for all parents, students, and family members.

Wishing you a good October!
