November 2016

From the President

Philip Ryken, President of Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL

Dear Parents,

It was good to see many of you on campus last weekend to help us enjoy the beautiful autumn weather.  The annual Talent Show revealed comedic and musical talent from all four undergraduate classes, and the Thunder football team won an important game against Carroll University, securing a spot in the NCAA Division III Playoffs.

Nearly 400 parents gathered for a prayer breakfast on Saturday morning, led by members of the Parent Council and Chaplain Blackmon.  I shared reflections from the prayer Jesus taught us to pray.  The Lord’s Prayer is a family prayer, taught by our “older brother (Hebrews 2:11), who taught us to call God “Our Father.”

The prayers of our parents are of inestimable value for Christ-centered higher education at Wheaton College. Wheaton alumna Kathleen Buswell Nielson '77 says of a parent’s prayers:

What confidence, to pray knowing that the Lord God hears and cares and answers, according to his perfect will. What hope, to pray knowing that he uses us to pass on the saving grace of Jesus Christ to the next generation. What mercy, that he cares so perfectly for us his children, and his children’s children, to a thousand generations.

Thank you for your ongoing ministry of prayer for your student and for Wheaton College.  We wish you and your family a blessed Thanksgiving.

In Christ’s service,

Philip Ryken

Post-Family Weekend

FamilyWeekend2014Thank you to the 1,500+ parents, siblings, grandparents, and friends who joined us on campus for Family Weekend. If you're an early planner, please mark your calendars now for Family Weekend 2017: November 3-4.

To keep in touch with campus events throughout the year, check out these opportunities:

  • Student chapel.  Student chapel services are live-streamed every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:40am CST.
  • Athletics events. Home athletic events can be accessed as well.

Lastly, if you have questions or would like to talk through an issue with a fellow Wheaton parent, consider getting in touch with a member of Wheaton's Parent Council. This group of volunteer parents serves as a resource to the College on issues unique to current parents.

News from the Center for Vocation and Career

It has been a busy semester here in the Center for Vocation and Career! Fall is an important recruiting season for students focused on finance and consulting opportunities. Twenty-three employers have conducted interviews on campus already this semester, and we expect a few more before the end of the calendar year. For students interested in other careers, activity will increase in the spring when organizations do the bulk of their hiring. Next semester, we will welcome another wave of employers for recruiting full-time positions and internship opportunities.

Externship Day is a one-day job shadow opportunity for students in all class years to explore a range of industries and companies. Alumni across Chicagoland host students at their workplace on Tuesday, February 7 (no classes that day). This is an excellent way for your student to start or grow a professional network! Over 100 students and 50 alumni hosts took part in this helpful program last year, and we expect to see a larger group participate this year. Applications for Externship Day 2017 will be available after Thanksgiving, so please encourage your student to get an application in quickly for a greater chance at being matched with one of their top choices.

Campus Housing for the Holidays

Smith Traber residence hallThanksgiving Housing
College housing and meal service remain open during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Christmas Housing
College housing closes at noon on Friday, December 16 and reopens at 3pm on Saturday, January 7. The regular meal plan ends with dinner on Thursday, December 15 and resumes with dinner on Saturday, January 7. During Christmas break the residence halls (Fischer, Smith-Traber and Upperclass Halls) are closed and no student is allowed to stay there for any reason.

With permission through the Residence Life office, students may stay as guests in a campus apartment or house during Christmas Break for the following reasons:

  • athletics
  • students who live internationally
  • campus employment
  • class participation

The student must meet one of the above qualifications and have permission from both the Residence Life office and the residents of the unit where they will be staying as a guest. Requests must be submitted to the Residence Life office by Monday, December 5.

Students who do not submit a Christmas Break housing request by December 5 are responsible for finding their own housing over Christmas Break. We are not able to guarantee approval for requests received after the deadline. Students who stay in campus housing without approval from the Residence Life office are subject to a fine of $25 per day.

As your student plans future arrival and departure dates, please reference our Housing Calendar for opening and closing dates and times.
