June 2026

From the President

Dear Parents,

This year Wheaton College celebrates an impressive list of notable anniversaries:

  • 10 years of Christ at the Core, our signature general education curriculum
  • 50 years of Human Needs and Global Resources, or HNGR, the six-month internship program that situates Wheaton students in majority world communities
  • 50 years of Billy Graham Scholars, more than a thousand international students, who completed a graduate degree at Wheaton before returning to leadership roles in more than 100 home countries around the world
  • 75 years of HoneyRock, our Northwoods Campus and leadership laboratory, through Christian camping
  • 100 years of the Symphony Orchestra, now under the direction of Maestro Ben Klemme

There is so much to celebrate!

Right after Commencement, my wife Lisa joined the orchestra for a ten-day tour of Ireland and England, with six performances in notable venues, including concert halls, churches, and shopping malls. When she returned, she made an observation that we often make about our beloved Wheaties: “Our students really are wonderful.”

We trust you agree. As parents, you know first-hand how gifted our students are, how committed they are to Christ, and what remarkable potential they have for advancing the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Over these summer months, we pray that our students, faculty, and staff will experience more of creation, connect again with friends and family members, and gather needed strength for next school year. We have the same hope and prayer for you, our faithful, encouraging, beloved Wheaton parents.

In Christ’s service,

Philip RykenPhilip Ryken

Introduction to Wheaton Passage The Orientation Program of Wheaton College

This year, Wheaton College will welcome the Class of 2030 through Wheaton Passage, the College’s dynamic orientation program for new students. Through on-campus orientation, experiential trips, small group connection, faculty involvement, and student leaders, Passage helps incoming students build relationships, explore spiritual formation, engage academic life, and enter into Christian community at Wheaton.

One of the unique strengths of Passage is that students can choose from a variety of experiences designed to meet different interests, comfort levels, and hopes for their transition to college. Whether students are looking for wilderness adventures, connection in a residential camp setting at HoneyRock, engagement with HoneyRock’s prized herd of horses, or a chance to engage with the city of Chicago, Passage offers a compelling entry point into the Wheaton community.

Passage Options

Wilderness Passage

Wilderness Passage invites students into outdoor adventure and small group community in some of the Midwest’s most beautiful natural settings. Students may choose between the following experiences:

  • Wilderness Rock Climbing at Devil’s Lake, Wisconsin, widely regarded as the premier rock climbing destination in the Midwest
  • Wilderness Canoeing along 100 protected miles of the Lower Wisconsin River
  • Wilderness Backpacking on Wisconsin’s Ice Age National Scenic Trail, which follows the terminus path of a glacier that covered the region during the last ice age

Northwoods Passage

Northwoods Passage takes place at Wheaton College’s HoneyRock Center for Leadership Development in northern Wisconsin. Set on Long Lake, part of the longest chain of freshwater lakes in the world, Northwoods Passage offers students a residential camp experience where they can build friendships, participate in classic HoneyRock activities, and begin life at Wheaton in a beautiful, formative setting.

Equestrian Passage

Equestrian Passage also takes place at HoneyRock and gives students the opportunity to connect with HoneyRock’s herd of more than 20 horses. This track offers a distinctive experience for students interested in equine programming and community formation.

Urban Passage

Urban Passage invites students to engage with the city of Chicago and learn from the richness of our neighbors. Urban Passage: Downtown explores the culture, complexity, and beauty of Chicago through immersive experiences across the city. Urban Passage: Woodlawn offers a deeper dive into the story, history, and community of the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago.

What Students Can Expect

Passage begins on campus, where new students and their families are welcomed by student leaders, staff, and faculty. During this time, students move in, participate in opening activities, and get acquainted with Wheaton College.

Students then depart for their selected Passage experience, where they connect in small groups with other new students, upper-class Passage Leaders, faculty, and staff. These smaller communities help students begin with meaningful relationships before returning to campus and joining the rest of the incoming class for worship, academic introductions, residence hall connections, and final preparations before classes begin. Passage is designed to help every new student find a meaningful beginning at Wheaton. Parents and families with questions are encouraged to visit the Passage website. Students should also review the packing lists for their selected Passage track as they prepare.

Students with accommodation needs may contact Wheaton’s Learning and Accessibility Services office at LAS@wheaton.edu. Student Financial Services awards financial assistance for Passage’s cost in correlation with each student’s financial aid package; questions about financial support may be directed to SFS@wheaton.edu.

Two Women Talking

Center for Vocation and Career Offers Services During the Summer

As we head into summer, the Center for Vocation and Career (CVC) is still here to help your students with their vocational questions and career conversations. Coaches are holding in-person and virtual appointments throughout the summer for all grades. Encourage your student to book an appointment here so they can maximize their summer, prepare for the fall, and think about life after Wheaton.

If you have a recent graduate, they are also welcome to make an appointment! Alumni have full access to CVC resources for up to two years after graduation.

Finally, tell your student to keep an eye on their email this summer. The CVC will be sending one email a month to each class with specific resources and action steps. We want to partner with them as they hit their appropriate career milestones and make the most of summer break.

Event Services

Wheaton’s Event Services (ES) department welcomes a wide variety of conferences, trainings, concerts, music competitions, sports camps, and youth groups each summer. This summer, the department will welcome approximately 5,500 people as part of overnight groups. Most participants are middle and high school students, but they also host adults, and sometimes even future Wheaton parents.

One of those parents, whose son recently completed his freshman year, serves as a leader with a national campus ministry that has hosted its annual summer training at Wheaton since 2023. While she was committed to letting her son make his own college decision, her visits to campus for the ministry’s trainings helped her become familiar with and appreciate Wheaton. “I think it gave the two of us a different kind of connection around Wheaton,” she said.

Event Services is looking forward to another busy summer building connections with potential future Wheaties and their families.

Studying Secondary Education at Wheaton College

Chairs and tables in a classroomWheaton students often ponder how they can use their studies at Wheaton College and the gifts God has given them to go out and impact the world after college. Many students find their academic departments to be helpful thought partners as they explore what meaningful, future-focused, and Christ-centered work could be. Students in the Department of Education often find fulfilling work as high school or middle school teachers.

A paired double major with multiple departments across campus, in partnership with the Illinois State Board of Education, offers our students the opportunity to gain licensure in six different majors in Secondary Education. Wheaton’s licensure officer also helps students determine reciprocity requirements for transferring an Illinois license to another state.

Teacher candidates leave Wheaton ready to teach in a diversity of school environments throughout the world. During their time at Wheaton College, teacher candidates engage in four practicum experiences, including student teaching partnerships with public, Christian, or international schools. Wheaton graduates are in high demand with school administrators who value their unique dedication and expertise. Additionally, this past year, 100% of our graduates who desired to teach reported finding a job in education.

Students who are curious about teaching should begin by taking Wheaton’s block of introductory courses, which can be taken either Fall or Spring semester of their freshman year:

  • EDUC 135: School and Society (A Quad, 2 credits)
  • EDUC 136: Teaching Diverse Learners (B Quad, 2 credits)
  • EDUC 136L: A cross-cultural tutoring experience with one of the many local ministry organizations or schools in the Wheaton area.

For students interested in doing a double major in Secondary Education, it can be helpful to get started early, though taking these introductory courses does not require students to declare a double major in education.

For incoming students – those who already know they want to teach or those curious about turning their studies into an impactful career – please reach out to Dr. Brita Beitler, Secondary Education Coordinator.
