HoneyRock Center for Leadership Development Celebrates 75th Anniversary
WHEATON, IL. — When George Halas, the iconic founder and coach of the Chicago Bears, looked to build his dream team, he had one man in mind to join him on the sidelines. But instead of the NFL spotlight, that man, Harve Chrouser, chose a higher calling that would impact generations, shaping lives far beyond the field in the heart of Wisconsin’s Northwoods.
Now, as HoneyRock, Wheaton College’s Center for Leadership Development, prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2026, it’s sharing the remarkable story of founder Harve Chrouser and the pivotal choice that shaped HoneyRock’s enduring legacy.
During World War II, Chrouser and Halas forged a close partnership while serving together in the U.S. Navy. Recognizing Chrouser’s leadership and strategic vision, Halas selected him as his deputy.
Throughout the war, the two collaborated aboard the USS San Clemente in the Pacific, turning their planning room into an improvised football think tank and a hub for postwar dreams.
Halas had a vision for the future of the Chicago Bears—and he wanted Chrouser to be part of it.
“I was hoping Harve would join my staff when we got home,” Halas reportedly confided to a visitor. “But he says he has a higher calling.”
That call would lead Chrouser back to Wheaton College.
Rather than chase a career in professional football, Chrouser returned to Wheaton with a vision: to create a place where young people could encounter Christ, grow as leaders, build authentic community, and be transformed through the outdoors.

In 1951, that vision became reality with HoneyRock. Over 75 years, HoneyRock has grown from a summer camp into a year-round center serving campers, college students, graduate students, gap-year participants, and outdoor leaders from around the world.
Chrouser turned down what many coaches would consider the pinnacle of success, choosing instead to invest in the next generation. Seventy-five years later, that decision continues to shape the lives and families of thousands.
That mission lives today through HoneyRock’s programs, which focus on leadership development, spiritual formation, authentic community, outdoor adventure, and whole-person growth.
As HoneyRock marks its 75th anniversary, celebrating “Generations Alive in Christ,” Chrouser’s story reminds us that the strongest legacies are built not on personal achievement but on faithfully answering a higher call.
