When Marcus Braziel thinks about data, he’s not thinking merely about numbers. His analysis begins with people.

As director of Wheaton College’s Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness and the College’s Accreditation Liaison Officer with the Higher Learning Commission, Braziel serves as a steward of the institution’s information.

“I like to think of our work as a Venn diagram with three circles,” Braziel said. “Institutional research is the data, analytics, and dissemination. Assessment asks, ‘How do we measure what students are learning?’ Accreditation ensures that we are committed to maintaining our rigorous academic standards.”

Together, those responsibilities help Wheaton understand not only how it is performing but also whether it is fulfilling its promise as a Christ-
centered institution.

Much of Braziel’s work involves reporting institutional data to the U.S. Department of Education and other agencies to meet compliance and accountability standards. Yet he sees his role as far more than compiling statistics.

“Data isn’t just about being a short-order cook and producing whatever someone asks for,” he said. “What I enjoy most is talking with stakeholders and uncovering what they really need.”

Braziel’s goal is to transform complex data into accessible stories that leaders across campus can understand and use. Through a combination of quantitative analysis and qualitative insights, he works to present information in ways that are clear, engaging, and actionable.

“Ultimately, we’re talking about humans, not numbers,” he said. “The challenge is to distill the information into something people can grasp and connect with.”

Braziel’s path to higher education was not a straight line. As a college student, he planned to become a newspaper reporter. After briefly working at a newspaper following graduation, he realized the profession was not the right fit. Drawing on administrative skills he developed working alongside his mother at a county courthouse, he accepted a position in the registrar’s office at Palm Beach Atlantic University, a member of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities.

Looking back, Braziel believes the transition was providential.

“I fell into higher education because the Lord was guiding my steps, even when I didn’t realize it,” he said.

Nearly two decades later, and with a Ph.D. in higher education under his belt, Braziel continues to pursue that calling by helping Wheaton use its data wisely. His work ensures that information not only fulfills reporting requirements but also strengthens the College’s ability to serve students and pursue its mission.
