10 Tips for Using Cigna Insurance

Using your Cigna Student Insurance to Prevent and Treat Illness

  1. Start at Wheaton College Student Health Services (SHS) M-Fri 8-4 p.m.

Almost all services are covered at 100%.  SHS will submit the charges to Cigna for you. Your student account will be only charged if a claim is denied.

  2. Get a flu shot or other immunizations at SHS because it is 100% covered. You also have up to $500 for preventative care (schedule an annual physical).
  3. Before you get sick, download, the Cigna Envoy app and save your ID card.

You should have received a Welcome Kit email from Cigna, which includes instructions on how to download the  Cigna Envoy app. You can use the app to access your ID card, track claims, find doctors, access telehealth services, and more!

  4. Cigna provides 24/7 student support in 170 languages.

For urgent issues call 1-800-441-2668 or send a secure message via the Cigna Envoy app.

  5. With Cigna Envoy, you can access Global Telehealth services 24/7 at no cost, giving you the ability to talk to a licensed provider via phone or video, at your convenience for many minor medical conditions. (This does not replace your primary care physician).
  6. If you are sick or get injured at night or on a weekend you can use your Cigna insurance to see a medical provider in the community.

Choose an in-network Cigna Open Access Plus (OAP) provider if you need to make an appointment with a medical provider at night, or on weekends. Search on the Cigna Envoy app.

Or choose an option from below:

  7. If you are struggling with mental health help is available!
The Cigna plan covers up to 30 visits for in-person mental health services per year. In addition to counselors at Wheaton College Counseling Center and doctors and counselors in our community, you can find licensed mental health providers in the app or Cigna offers access to Headspace, a 27/7 text based coaching app.
  8. Bring your insurance ID card when picking up medications at the pharmacy.
Prescription medications are covered at 100% at SHS.  At local pharmacies you will pay a copay and 10% of the cost of the medication.  Copays vary (generics are the most cost effective!) Most over-the-counter medications if dispensed from SHS are covered at 100%.
  9. Preventative dental and vision coverage is included.
Dental cleanings and x-rays are covered up to $500 per year.  Restorative dental procedures are not covered.  Vision coverage includes an eye exam and $150 for glasses or contacts.
  10. Learn what items are excluded by the plan.
Not all conditions are covered.  They must be medically necessary.    Refer the plan brochure on the app for more exclusions. Maternity/pregnancy is not included in this plan.  Contact SHS for more details.
