The MA in TESOL has been offered since 2000 in a field-based format for ELIC teachers. Two weeks of courses are taken in January each year in Thailand, and four weeks of courses are taken each year in July on Wheaton’s campus. During the rest of the year, the students work as teachers in various Asian countries. Combined with the TEFL Certificate, this MA takes three years to earn.
Through a cooperative arrangement between English Language Institute/China (ELIC) and Wheaton College, students accepted by both ELIC and Wheaton College will pay approximately 2/3 of normal on-campus tuition rates. Intensive Classes are conducted every summer for 3 or 4 weeks and every winter for 2 weeks. Advance work, including reading, research, projects, is required for all intensive courses. It is necessary to apply to BOTH Wheaton College and ELIC because the application processes are distinct from each other. Acceptance by one does not guarantee acceptance by the other.
If you are with an agency other than ELIC, you are welcome to join the field-based program. This is especially helpful for teachers in Asian contexts.
If you are interested in the M.A. in Intercultural Studies/TESOL with ELIC, read about Professional Development on the ELIC website or contact the Wheaton/ELIC Program Administrator, Pam Barger.
