Wheaton College Graduate School offers two licenses for Master of Arts programs, the Elementary (1-6) License and the Secondary (6-12) License.

The M.A.T. program is ideal for current undergraduate Wheaton students who want to earn their initial teaching license with an accelerated program or for or subject matter experts who wish to transition into a teaching career.

Prepares to teach and lead for human flourishing. Why Wheaton for your Master's in Teaching?

There's an incredible teacher shortage in Illinois and around the the United States. Earning a master of arts in teaching allows those without a bachelor's degree in education to earn the skills, knowledge, and credentials needed to enter the teaching profession.

 

How to Become a Teacher

Wheaton's M.A.T. program is accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). This means that after successful completion of the program, you'll be eligible for state licensure in Illinois, which can be transferred to other states.

Initial Teaching License Areas

You can choose from one of two Illinois teaching licensure areas:

Elementary - Grades 1-6 Secondary Education - Grades 6-12
Offered for students with undergraduate degree who wish to teach in grades 1-6. Offered in content areas including Biology, Chemistry, English, French, German, History/Social Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Spanish.

Accelerated Option: The 5th Year M.A.T.

Current Wheaton undergraduate students have an option to pursue their master's degree in teaching by adding one additional year to their studies.

ESL Endorsement

Add an ESL or Bilingual Education Endorsement to your teaching credentials. The endorsements must be added to a teaching license for the elementary, middle, or secondary levels for graduates to be ESL and bilingual education teachers in both public and private schools.
