International English Proficiency

If English is not your native language, you must demonstrate proficiency by submitting scores from either the TOEFL exam or IELTS exam. Applicants who do not meet minimum English proficiency requirements will not be admitted to Wheaton College Graduate School.

The following requirements apply to all international students and U.S. permanent residents whose native language is not English.

For international Master program applicants, you can choose from four exams, IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, or MAT. For international Ph.D. and Psy.D. applicants, you must complete both GRE and TOEFL.

Required English proficiency exam for all international applicants:

TOEFL Paper-Based Test TOEFL Internet-Based Test (iBT) IELTS Test

MA TESOL, MA Teaching, and MFT 600 100** 7.0
Ph.D. and Psy.D.  600 100** 7.0

*Please note that a minimum score of 18 is required for each of the iBT categories (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing).

Exceptions will be made if:

  • You are a citizen of Australia, Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand or the British West Indies, and are a native speaker of English.
  • You have studied in one of the countries mentioned above or in the U.S. within the past three years and have a good academic record at the school attended.

Applicants who are exempted from the TOEFL may be required to take the GRE.

Internationals, or legal residents with a green card, who apply for INTT and have a master's degree earned in a foreign country must submit a TOEFL score—they are not exempt from the TOEFL just because they have an MA from their home country. They are only exempt from submitting a TOEFL (or GRE) score if they have earned the master's degree in the USA.
