Gina Yi, Ph.D.

Gina Yi has over 15 years of teaching experience; in addition to her teaching experiences in South Korea, she was a music teacher at the Cornerstone Schools in Detroit, Michigan and taught early childhood music classes at the Michigan State University Community Music School. Prior to her appointment at Wheaton College, Yi held positions as interim director of music education at Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne and assistant professor of music education at Baldwin Wallace University. During these appointments, she taught elementary general music methods, secondary general music methods, introduction to music education, music teaching in a diverse society, and senior seminar. She holds certifications in Music Learning Theory (Elementary I & II and Early Childhood I) and attended Orff-Schulwerk and Dalcroze Eurhythmics certification workshops.

Yi participated as a clinician at numerous conferences for music educators - including Michigan Music Conference, Ohio Music Education Association Conference, and Wayne County Health & Family Services Head Start Teacher Training Conference - presenting on topics such as early childhood music, elementary general music, music literacy, assessment, and world music. She has also presented at various workshops as a leading clinician, published several instructional materials and songbooks, and developed music programs for children in South Korea. Yi’s research interests include elementary general music, early childhood music, measurement and assessment, differentiation of instruction, and performance psychology. She has presented her research at the International Society for Music Education (ISME), the International Symposium on Assessment in Music Education (ISAME), the Desert Skies Symposium, the Suncoast Music Education Research Symposium (SMERS), and the Mountain Lake Colloquium.
