FPE Writing Competition

The Center is pleased to sponsor this contest which seeks to encourage and recognize excellence in academic research writing related to the nexus of economics, government, and public policy.

Submissions are judged based on scholarly contribution, clarity, originality, and organization by a panel of faculty readers from the Department of Politics and International Relations and Business and Economics.

Contest Description


Students are asked to submit an academic research paper analyzing a problem related to the nexus of economics, government, and/or public policy. The paper may include theological, historical or philosophical perspectives, and may also include analysis that is scientific in nature and some suggested topics are:

  • Alternative and traditional sources of energy
  • Poverty and development
  • Fiscal imbalances, taxation and reform
  • Globalization
  • Immigration


  • No more than 20 double-spaced pages
  • 10 or 12 point standard font
  • References and footnotes according to MLA, APA CMS or CBA style
  • Include title on the bottom right of each page


  • Current, undergraduate Wheaton College students
  • Paper must not have been previously published
  • Papers submitted for in-class credit are eligible, must be original work


  • Deadline is Friday, March 24, 2017, 5:00pm
  • Include contest entry form – student’s name should be only on this form.
  • Do not put name on the manuscript
  • Hard copy with contest entry form to Heidi Leffler, Pol/IR office, Memorial Student Center
  • Email copy to heidi.leffler@wheaton.edu


  • Based on scholarly contribution, clarity, originality, and organization.
  • Papers are judged anonymously by a panel of faculty readers from the Politics/International Relations and Business/Economics, and the FPE director.
  • Judges reserve the right to not award the prize if essays do not meet the minimum requirements.

Publication Rights

The Wheaton Center for Faith, Politics and Economics (FPE) reserves the right to use any prize-winning paper for publication or promotional purposes.
