TESOL workshops in two flexible formats
FACE-TO-FACE on the Wheaton College campus
ONLINE by Skype in real time
Many have expressed their desire for more TESOL training so that they can be better equipped to handle the challenges of teaching English to internationals, but sometimes obstacles such as cost and time commitment stand in the way. We believe that the one-day workshop format with two ways to participate opens up options for further professional training.
This flexible format serves three main purposes:
- Provides a convenient, low cost option for additional TESOL training
- Offers the option of combining select one-day workshops into the ROWE 30-hour certificate
- Gives past ICCT participants an opportunity to continue growing professionally
Virtual Participation extends these benefits in several ways:
- Individuals who live outside of the Chicago area can participate via an online platform
- Eliminates travel or overnight housing costs
Spring 2019 Workshops
Basics of ESL Teaching 102:
Saturday, April 6, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
This workshop provides a strong foundation for effective ESL teaching. It focuses on both foundational principles of teaching and learning a language as well as practical aspects such as needs analysis and lesson planning. It can be combined with two other specific workshops (102 & 103) for a 30 hour Reach Out with English (ROWE) certificate.
Basics of ESL Teaching 103:
Saturday, April 27, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
This workshop focuses on the basic principles of vocabulary teaching and learning as well as effective practices for presenting and incorporating vocabulary into your lessons. In addition, we will explore how to best assist learners with idioms and slang. Finally, we will explore various ESL dictionaries and determine ways to choose and use them effectively.
For those of you who take the Basics of ESL Teaching 101 this fall, the two workshops offered next spring will allow you to complete the 30-hour ROWE Certificate by summer once all homework assignments have been completed.
Summer 2019 Workshops
Reach Out With English (30 hour certificate course):
June 3-7, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
ROWE is for those who have had little or no professional preparation in this area and those who want a refresher course that offers practical instruction for learning how to teach ESL/EFL to adults. No prior teaching experience or knowledge of linguistics is assumed.
Essentials of Teaching English Pronunciation:
June 10-14, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Teaching pronunciation is extremely challenging. Without specific training, it is difficult to know how to correct learners for improved fluency and comprehensibility of speech. In this 30-hour non-credit course, participants will gain the skills necessary to diagnose errors and assist learners in improving their listening and production of the various elements of English pronunciation.
