NEW! Cross-Cultural Living and Ministry Online Course

Cross-Cultural Living and Ministry is an online course designed to assist Christians in better understanding, communicating, and serving in cross-cultural settings. This four-week course includes online content as well as personal interaction with a culture helper from a focus host culture and video chat sessions weekly with an instructor.

The course culminates with the learner creating a culture profile of their host culture as well as a culture learning plan to use in the future.

TESOL Courses and Workshops

Two ways to participate-- on campus or online

These very practical training events meet the needs of ESL/EFL teachers and volunteers who have had little or no training for teaching English.

Each workshop provides eight hours of practical instruction on foundational topics for ESL/EFL teachers and volunteers.

Basics 101 (offered this fall), Basics 102, and Basics 103 can be combined for a 30-hour Reach Out with English certificate. The other workshop is an elective and builds on the foundation of the Basics workshops.

  • Basics of ESL Teaching 101: Saturday, October 12, 2019
  • Essentials of One-to-One ESL Teaching 402: Saturday, November 2, 2019

Provides a basic foundation in teaching ESL/EFL to adults. Thirty contact hours. Offered on campus each summer in early June as a one-week intensive course. May be taken for credit or non-credit. Virtual participation is now available. 

 

  • Take a one-week intensive course (Tentative dates: June 1-5, 2020)

  • Take 3 one-day workshops offered throughout the year

 

During the spring, we can offer the ROWE course in an off-site location in cooperation with a sponsoring church or agency. Recent locations have been Columbus, OH and Indianapolis, IN.

Provides a foundational understanding of the English grammar system and equips participants with the skills necessary to introduce grammatical concepts to their ESL/EFL learners in clear, uncomplicated ways. Thirty contact hours, non-credit only. 

 

Tentative Dates: June 8-12, 2020

Provides a foundational understanding of the English pronunciation system and equips participants with the skills necessary to diagnose pronunciation errors and assist learners in improving their listening and production of the various elements of English pronunciation. Thirty contact hours, non-credit only.

Online Courses for Learning a Second Language

Our  prepare pre-field and on-field personnel to become more effective and efficient language learners regardless of learning methods – attending a language school, working with a tutor, independent learning, or a combination of approaches.

Our most popular SLA course is for individuals who plan to learn one or more new languages while living in a cross-cultural setting. Most are planning for significant use of the heart-language of the host community. Offered six times each year, and requires approximately 3-4 hours per day for six weeks. Customized to meet individual needs, and includes frequent one-on-one Skype interaction with instructor(s). Flexible scheduling for those with other commitments. Courses start on these dates*:

This SLA course for non-beginners is for those who already have an intermediate grasp of the language and want to develop the competence needed for deeper conversations in the language of the host community and more meaningful heart-language relationships. Offered six times each year, and requires approximately 3-4 hours per day for six weeks or 1-2 hours per day for twelve weeks. Highly customized to meet individual needs, and includes frequent one-on-one Skype interaction with instructor(s). Flexible scheduling for those with other commitments.

This course is for beginning learners who need a basic grasp of the language for daily life activities. It is ideal for those who plan to serve 1-3 years and those who may serve longer but do not plan for significant heart-language ministry. Offered multiple times each year, and requires approximately 3-4 hours per day for three weeks, or 1.5-2 hours per day for six weeks. Customized to meet individual needs, and includes frequent one-on-one Skype interaction with instructor(s). Courses start on these dates*:

For those who plan to serve four years or longer, this course begins with the 3-week Introduction to Language Learning course (listed above) followed by individual coaching, and then an additional 3-week course that is similar to an abbreviated version of the SLA for Continuing Learners course (listed above). The three phases usually span about 7-9 months:

Phase 1: Three weeks of online instruction, requiring 3-4 hours per day, for beginning learners who have been on the field no more than about two months and pre-field learners who will begin language learning within a few weeks.

Phase 2: For 6-7 months of the language learning process, individual coaching by ICCT faculty via email and Skype.

Phase 3: Three weeks of online instruction, requiring 3-4 hours per day, that is highly customized to meet each learner's individual needs.
