Internships

WIC interns participate in community organizations such as Operation PUSH.

Wheaton In Chicago students will participate in an internship that puts them in contact with professionals working in urban communities. The internship sites will provide the context for real life experiences that will flesh out the reality of what the students learn in their classes concerning urban issues. Each internship, will be tailored to the individual student’s interests and career path while pushing the student to consider Christian living in an urban context. Many internships bring students face-to-face with issues of poverty, racism, and reconciliation.

How do you get an internship?

Think carefully about the type of internship in which you would be interested. Consult with Dr. Toly, Sean Young, or your departmental advisor for suggestions. The Urban Studies office maintains a listing of all internships done in previous years that will be made available to you. Students also find internships by searching the web and through word-of-mouth referrals. You can also consult with the office of Urban Studies if you have any questions at (630) 752-5730 or email wic@wheaton.edu.

We suggest that you identify two or three potential internships and, if possible, meet with potential supervisors during the semester before your enrollment in the program. Find out what their expectations would be and meet the other staff. Be certain that your direct supervisor will be on site and will present you with clear work assignments. Find an internship that will challenge and stretch you. We require each student to send the Urban Studies Director a weekly update on their internship activity. We also ask internship supervisors to evaluate each student at the end of the semester.

Internship placement for students from other schools

Interns participated in an ecumenical rally for worker's rights.

For students from other colleges participating in Wheaton in Chicago, the Urban Studies office offers assistance in securing an internship. We will make our database of past internships available to you and advise you on the strengths and weaknesses of various internship options. We encourage each student to narrow their choices down to two or three options and then contact those organizations. In some cases we expect that students will still spend their first week in Chicago visiting their potential internship sites to finalize their choice.
