The On-Campus
Program
In
addition to URBN 231, students completing
the Urban Studies certificate on campus must complete another
19 credit hours of work. The required internship can be taken
for up to eight hours of credit. All students are also required
to take the Integration Seminar, which involves writing a capstone
paper at the end of the Urban Studies Program. Beyond these
requirements, students should take four to six hours from the
following courses: Urban History (HIST 455), Urban Sociology
(SOC 364), or Cultural Context of Education (EDUC 121). The
remaining credits can be obtained by taking a broad array of
urban-related courses offered in other departments.
The required
internship must be completed in an urban context, preferably while living in the city.

Field Trips
Urban
Studies must be taught and lived. Therefore, wherever possible,
field trip experiences are integrated into Urban Studies courses.
This begins with the introductory CHICAGO class in which all
students do at least a day-long field trip into Chicago.
The CHICAGO course also offers a Weekend in Chicago
to a limited number of students every semester, in which students
spend an entire weekend touring Chicago's colorful neighborhoods.
