Urban Studies Goals and Objectives

Our goals and objectives are an expression of our multi-faceted vision for Urban Studies at Wheaton College as well as the measuring rod by which we evaluate our contributions to the college's education experience.

Gaining understanding and empathy

  • To provide students with an interdisciplinary framework within which the great diversity of urban life, including its cultural, social, economic and political institutions, can be explored.
  • To give students an understanding of the structural causes of poverty and racial injustice.
  • To broaden students' multi-cultural perspectives by enabling them to gain a greater awareness and empathy for the urban experiences of people of color.

Building a commitment to do justice and mercy

  • To help students strengthen their commitment to live out a Christian ethic by providing for the poor and to seeking justice and mercy in the world.
  • To provide students with an ethic of Christian servant-leadership and a vision of ministry and the work of the church in the city.
  • To guide students in discerning whether the Lord is calling them into some form of urban ministry.

Providing the opportunity to become engaged

  • To give students the opportunity to experience firsthand the joys and sorrows of life in the city by enabling students to live and work in the city.
  • To give students the experience of living within a faith community in the city by providing student housing in Chicago.
  • To encourage students interested in pursuing careers working in the city by providing them with internships related to their disciplinary interests.

Serving as a bridge

  • To strengthen the campus community's awareness of and commitment to all forms of Christian engagement in the city by serving as a bridge between the city and the Wheaton College community.
  • To make the Urban Studies Program more visible within the life of Wheaton College while making Wheaton College more responsive and accessible to community people in Chicago.
