The professional Certificate in TESOL
This 24-semester-hour
Certificate provides a complete package of professional training,
with courses which cover all of the major areas of the field
as established by TESOL (the organization of English language
teachers). Classes cover both the theory of the field (e.g.,
applied linguistics, educational theory, sociolinguistics)
and specific practical areas (curriculum development, computer-aided
language learning, literacy, testing).
Although
the required courses
in the Certificate are embedded in the M.A. program, some
students prefer to earn just the Certificate. This is a valuable
option if a student has already earned an M.A. or is interested
in positions which don't require a full M.A., such as some
adult ESL teaching positions.
Students
who already have a public school teaching certificate for
Illinois or another state can add an ESL endorsement by completing
the Certificate in TESOL. The ESL endorsement can be highly
competitive on the job market.
