Mission Statement
Evangelicals are united in their
commitment to the truthfulness and final authority of the
Bible. Nevertheless, progress in bringing the biblical witness
to bear, appropriately and fruitfully, on the academic disciplines
has been sadly limited. To address this problem, this conference
is offering the opportunity for Christian scholars across
the humanities and social sciences disciplines to dialogue
with their colleagues in Biblical and Theological Studies
to promote uses of Scripture in scholarship that go beyond
both simplistic, reductive proof-texting and vaguely thematic
appropriations of Scripture.
We trust that the authority of
Scripture in Christian scholarship can become truly functional,
not just nominal, and that academic work based on such a foundation
can meet the highest scholarly standards. Moreover, we believe
that scholarship across the disciplines, so enriched, can
in turn more profoundly inform biblical and theological scholarship.
This conference provides the venue for Christian scholars
in the humanities and social sciences together with their
colleagues in Biblical and Theological Studies to explore
new avenues for scholarship deeply rooted in Scripture.
