PSYC 101 - GUIDELINES
FOR EXTRA CREDIT
[Click here for Extra Credit Verification Forms]
In introductory psychology, you may earn a maximum
of 20 points of extra credit, in addition to the total number of points
possible. Each extra credit assignment is worth 5 points, so you are able
to complete a total of four assignments during the semester. To verify
your participation in a study or the completion of one of the writing
options, you are required to turn in an Extra Credit Verification Form
for each study or paper to Dr. Struthers no later than the last Thursday
of the regular semester. VERIFICATION FORMS CAN BE FOUND BY LINKING
TO ECVERIF.HTML; PLEASE BE AWARE THAT IT IS
YOUR RESPONSIBILITY (NOT THE RESEARCHERS) TO SUBMIT A VERIFICATION FORM
FOR ANY STUDY THAT YOU PARTICIPATE IN. No substitions will be accepted.
Any of these four extra credit assignments
can be fulfilled by choosing for the following options:
1) Participation in Research (maximum of 5
points per study):
In our department, faculty, undergraduate majors,
and graduate students often conduct research that requires the participation
of human subjects, and you may earn 5 points for each study you participate
in. At various times in the semester such opportunities will be announced
in class; typically students needing voluntary subjects will be outside
Barrows auditorium during Thursday's break to sign-up participants. It
will be your responsibility to keep track of any studies you sign-up for;
if you miss a reserved time for a study for any reason you will forfeit
those points.
2) Critique a Psychological Journal Article
You may earn 5 points of extra credit by writing
a short (2-3 page) critique of a recent journal article in psychology.
You may want to use Psychological Abstracts or PsycLit to help identify
articles of interest to you. In each paper, please summarize the article,
described how it is related to material we cover in this course, and discuss
your reaction and assessment of its conclusions. If appropriate, relate
how and why you chose this article and the general psychological topic(s)
relevant to it. When turning in your article to Dr. Struthers, indicate
that it is for PSYC 101 extra credit and be sure to include your name and
CPO number in the title page. Also you must include a photocopy of the
article you read to receive credit. Note, articles from Psychology Today,
other magazines (e.g., Time, Newsweek, etc.), and summaries
of internet resources (including AOL documents) are not appropriate
for this option.
3) Other Extra Credit Opportunity Specified
in Class
Note: All extra credit assignments must be turned
in to Dr. Struthers (BGC M246) no later than the final Tuesday session
of PSYC 101 for the current semester. Please see him if you have
any questions regarding extra credit. |
