September 2007

Litfin

Over 600 freshmen and transfers arrived on campus recently for a special week-long orientation program planned and organized by a student committee. Their theme was, “With One Voice.” Despite the many wonderful differences represented in this extraordinary group of new students, they have already begun to demonstrate that when it comes to serving the Lord they truly do know how to sing “with one voice.” Pray for your student, and for us as we nurture these wonderful young people. Ask that God would help us grow in every dimension this year, but especially in learning more of what it means to love Him with our minds.

Dr. Duane Litfin, President

New Safety Measures Coming this Fall

clock

Later this fall, the Physical Plant will begin installing new digital clocks in every classroom, department office, dorm public area, academic public area and auxiliary building on campus. The clocks double as a message board during an emergency, allowing our public safety officials to flash warnings and updates in real time. Connected to the marquee boards will be speakers, which can play tones, bells, horns, chimes and pre-recorded audio messages during an emergency. This system is designed to work in tandem with our RedAlert paging system, which notifies students and staff of an emergency via cell phone or land line. Please encourage your student to voluntarily participate in the RedAlert program by contacting Public Safety.

TAKE NOTE

Financial Aid

Your son or daughter can access BannerWeb by using his or her PIN number. If an adjustment is made to a financial award, students are notified of the change by e-mail. The e-mail message instructs your student to log on to BannerWeb.

Students who have been awarded Federal Work-Study money have until October 1 to find a federal work-study job. If the student has not secured a work-study position by October 1, the federal work-study funds will be removed from their award and reallocated to other students. If your son or daughter is still looking for a work-study position, encourage him or her to stop by the work-study job board located outside of the Career Services Office. Beyond work-study, students can still find other jobs that are paid through regular college payroll or off campus positions through the Career Development Office.

Stafford Loan funds will not be disbursed for students who have not signed their Master Promissory Note with their lender. Students should check with their lender to confirm whether or not they have signed their note. Parents can still apply for a PLUS loan to help with fall and/or spring costs.

As of September 30 late charges will accrue on accounts where there is a balance due, including those where aid has not been disbursed.

As a reminder, all correspondence with students is to their Wheaton College e-mail address. It is therefore important they check their e-mail at least weekly.

Wheaton College Bookstore

We have welcomed and provided textbooks for many of your students and it has been a delight to meet them! We will be offering our EasyBooks Service again in December/January for the Spring Semester; we will keep you posted on the specific timing. Here are some additional ways we look forward to serving you and your students:

  1. ThunderBucks PLUS – can now be used at our C-store in lower Beamer Center. We carry shampoo, toothpaste, class supplies, dorm supplies, milk, brownie mixes, cereal & MANY more items. It is a great on-campus spot to pick up a quick snack, project supplies, a devotional & journal, or cards to wish someone a Happy Birthday! Student ID cards can be loaded with ThunderBucks PLUS dollars on our website – www.wheatonbooks.com – please allow one business day to process. ThunderBucks PLUS $$’s roll over every semester until your student graduates & can also be used for meals in Anderson Commons at reduced prices, food at the Stupe Café and Grill, “Fun On The Run” Catering services, and snacks at concession stands at sporting events.
  2. Apple Computers – Our Apple representative, Adam Caciano, will be available at the C-store one evening a week for questions on MacBooks, Ipods, software. Encourage your student to meet with him on Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m.
  3. BuyBack – We buy back textbooks every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. - noon, with extended hours during finals week. Each year during finals week in December, we return over $100,000 to the students through our BuyBack program. We pay 50% of the NEW price of the book (even if bought used) for books that will be used the next semester at Wheaton. All other books are purchased for a wholesaler, still giving your student cash back.

Did you know that we are owned and operated by the College, our staff is employed by the College, and that we employ 15-20 students each year? Also, as a campus department all revenue from the Bookstore returns to the College fund. When you make your purchases at the Bookstore you know what you are supporting – in today’s retail atmosphere that is not always clear. We thank you for your continued support and we look forward to serving you and your students.

The Wheaton Football Team's only loss in its 1904 season was to the School of the Art Institute. In these early years of football--looked disparagingly upon by President Charles Blanchard--student athletes often made their own uniforms and played without a coach and were overseen by volunteer referees (with or without a rule book). For many years President Blanchard put football in the same category with gambling and hard liquor.

Visit our new athletics website to learn more about Wheaton Thunder sports.
