October 2007

DrLitfin
Ephesians 4:16 “from him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”

The breadth and richness of the Wheaton College family was evident at Homecoming last month in two of the alumni who were honored. On the one hand, Dr. Beatrice Batson (MA ’47) was honored for her long service as professor of English Literature and department chair. Bea was the founder of Wheaton’s Shakespeare Collection. On the other hand, Mr. Jasper Bacon (BA ’82) was our speaker in Homecoming Chapel. Jasper, an African-American alumnus who co-captained Wheaton’s 1981 football team, is the founding director of Mississippi’s “In His Steps Ministry” for children and families of incarcerated men. These two choice servants, Jasper and Beatrice, were just two examples of the rich diversity of Christ’s body at Wheaton evident during a wonderful Homecoming Weekend.

Understanding the Recruiting Cycle

Traditionally, Wheaton College graduates begin their job search during Spring Semester.  However, most college recruiters begin their recruiting activities in August and conclude in March. Coupled with the statistic that it will take between 6-8 months to procure employment, it pays to start the job search early.

College recruiters are aware that most students will be graduating in May and have adjusted each Recruiting Class to start after graduation. Because of the College Recruiting cycle, students that take significant “time-off” after-graduation may find it more challenging to get a particular job once they return.

The job market is excellent right now, and recruiters are clamoring to get top notch graduates.  It is important to understand that very few college recruiters actually consider “major,” or “experience” for entry-level positions. They are more likely to look for qualities like Communication Skills, Integrity, and Teamwork Skills. More important than actual experience in a field, they are looking for teachable recruits whom they can train.

Wheaton has exceptional graduates and Career Services wants to make sure they are equipped as they enter their Harvest Field whether grad school, working in the marketplace or raising support.

Upcoming On-Campus Interviews:

  • Federated Insurance
  • Kimberly-Clark
  • Walgreens
  • PriceWaterhouseCoopers
  • Target
  • InvestorTools
  • EFEducation International

TAKE NOTE

Financial Aid

Did you know that the Financial Aid office regularly communicates with your son or daughter electronically? Instead of looking for a paper notification from Financial Aid, your son or daughter needs to check their Wheaton College e-mail account at least weekly, in addition to logging on to BannerWeb.

Remind your son or daughter to continually update their e-mail address, postal mailing address, and other contact information so that FAFSA PIN mailers and PIN reminders can be delivered to the proper locations in a timely manner. Students can update their contact information by visiting FAFSA.ed.gov and selecting "corrections." The U.S. Department of Education no longer generates and mails paper renewal FAFSAs to students. All students who meet the 2008-09 renewal eligibility criteria, and who applied for the 2007-08 award year by October 28, 2007, will be sent an initial renewal reminder by e-mail if they have a valid e-mail address. If not, but have a valid mailing address, a renewal reminder letter will be sent instead of an e-mail.

The 2008-09 Wheaton College Institutional Application will be available on Financial Aid's website in mid-January, as well as a link to the FAFSA application. The suggested application date for returning students is April 15.

Student Health Services

Student Health Services (SHS) is located at the Wyngarden Health Center, located on campus in the “Quad." SHS is available to all students enrolled in classes at Wheaton College, regardless of insurance. Walk-in visits to see a nurse are free of charge. A nurse must be seen before seeing a Medical Provider. There are five Medical Providers available for appointments for a fee of $20.00. Students may also make an appointment to see a licensed, registered dietician. Massage therapy for low cost is available for female students.

SHS hours are Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Saturday 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Nurses are on call all other hours and can be reached for an emergency by dialing Public Safety.

The fall brings color changes, cool breezes, sweaters, and … the flu. Available now at Student Health Services, students may come in and get their flu shot for only $20.00 (billed to their student account). We are also offering flu clinics in the lower Beamer Center on most Wednesdays and Thursdays during the month of October. For more information about the flu (influenza) and the vaccine, access www.cdc.gov/flu.

Meningitis is a rare bacterial infection that affects the covering of the brain and spinal cord. Student Health Services is offering a limited number of meningitis vaccines for the reduced price of $95.00. Please browse www.cdc.gov for more information about meningitis.

For a complete list of our hours, services, staff and current issues, please access our website at www.wheaton.edu/healthsvcs.

Unusual for its day, Jonathan Blanchard, Wheaton’s founder, believed that “it is far better that the sexes should be educated together.” So, in 1860 Adeline Collins began studies closer to home after transferring from Oberlin College. In 1862 she became Wheaton’s first female graduate.
