May/June 2008

Dr. LitfinOn May 11, I once again had the privilege to present diplomas to a new crop of Wheaton College graduates. This annual academic pageant coincides with the return to campus of hundreds of Wheaton alumni, some of whom finished at Wheaton more than 75 years ago. The juxtaposition of these two groups, the one going out, the other coming back, is a regular reminder of the mission and purpose of the College: to develop whole and effective Christians who will make an impact for Christ on church and society around the world. As we contemplate our sesquicentennial celebration in 2010, we do well to be reminded that Wheaton has been doing this for almost 150 years. These new graduates, now called alumni, are the primary way the College has always made its mark upon the world. Pray with us for these latest additions to our alumni family, asking the Lord to protect them, provide for them, and direct them in the way He would have them go.

Dr. Duane Litfin, President

Wheaton Fund

The Wheaton Fund continues to help close the gap between a good education and a truly excellent education, allowing Wheaton to remain affordable to the largest possible spectrum of students.

The Wheaton Fund 2007-08 fiscal year-end goal is $4.6 million. As of today, we have received gifts of $3.85 million, with $750,000 remaining in order to attain the goal by June 30, 2008. Thank you to the many alumni, parents and friends of Wheaton who faithfully, generously, and thoughtfully prayed and gave. You helped make a difference! Consider this note from a Wheaton student:

During my college search, Wheaton was always the "unattainable dream." I never thought I would get in, and then I did. Even then, I never thought I would have the money to come. But God took care of that as well, in part due to your gracious gifts. I thank you for your generosity. I know that I am supposed to be at Wheaton and that God will use these four years to groom me into a more useful servant in His Kingdom. Thank you for this opportunity.
Mike, Class of 2011

Dean's List and Commencement Press Releases

Making the Dean's List or earning a diploma is a proud moment for any parent. If your student has earned the right to be called a Dean's List scholar or a graduate of Wheaton College this past semester, and you would like to share the news, visit http://www.wheaton.edu/news/release-request.php.

The Media Relations office at Wheaton College has posted a quick form there, which will be used to create a press release written specifically about your student. Parents, you may then forward the press release on to your local media outlets for coverage.

Please note: at this time, we are only able to generate press releases for students who graduated or made the Dean's List in May 2008.

Questions? Email the Media Relations office at Media.Relations@wheaton.edu.

Financial Aid

The Financial Aid office has started making financial aid awards for students returning in the fall. Encourage your student to check BannerWeb to be sure all of the necessary forms are completed for the 2008-09 school year.

We continue to assist students and parents in meeting the cost of a Wheaton College education. Parents who would like to take out a PLUS loan to help cover their expected contribution can do so. This loan is at an 8.5% fixed interest rate with payment beginning after the second disbursement of the loan in the spring semester. While a specific amount may be shown on the award notice, the PLUS loan can actually be taken out by the parent for the total amount of the budget which consists of tuition, room, board, books, and personal/miscellaneous expenses less any financial aid the student is receiving. Instructions for applying will be included with your student’s award notice or by a message in BannerWeb.

Does your student need money for summer school? Summer financial aid application forms are available online for those who have remaining Stafford Loan eligibility. It is also necessary to have a 2007-08 FAFSA and institutional application on file.

If you have questions on a loan or financial aid in general, counselors are available in the financial aid office and can be reached at 630.752.5021 or by email at FinAid@wheaton.edu.

Student Health Services

The Student Health Services (SHS) is located at the Wyngarden Health Center near the “Quad.” The SHS is available to all students enrolled in classes at Wheaton College regardless of insurance. Walk-in visits to see nurse are free of charge. A nurse must be seen before seeing a medical provider. There are five medical providers available for appointments. The charge for that service is $20.00. Students may make an appointment to see a licensed, registered dietician. Massage therapy for low cost is also available for female students.

SHS offers a variety of low cost services:
• Laboratory services
• Immunizations
• Prescription medications (after seeing a medical provider)
• Allergy immunotherapy (after seeing an allergist)
• Wart removal
• Loan of medical equipment
• Rapid strep, mono, and influenza testing
• Self-help table free of charge

The SHS clinic will be closing May 12, 2008. The summer hours will be 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. with administrative services provided during these hours. If you have any questions about our services please call 630.752.5072 or email at HealthSvcs@wheaton.edu.

Wheaton College requires all students registered for 9 or more credit hours and all degree-seeking students to have health insurance that provides benefits for both emergency and non emergency treatment in the Wheaton area. More information regarding the health insurance requirements may be accessed at www.wheaton.edu/healthsvcs.

Students are automatically enrolled in the Wheaton College Student Health Insurance Plan upon registration for classes. If they have coverage that meets the Wheaton College requirements, they may waive the student plan by completing the online waiver on our website. Subtracting the insurance fee from the total bill cannot be a substitute for completing the waiver. Failure to complete the online waiver by the deadline will result in the mandatory purchase of the College's health plan. Currently the online waiver is only available for students registered for summer 2008 classes. The submission deadline for the first session classes is May 19, 2008, and June 16, 2008 for second session classes. If you have any questions or need further information, please contact Karen Mulder at 630.752.5573 or Karen.K.Mulder@wheaton.edu.

Students enrolling at Wheaton College for fall 2008 will soon be receiving information regarding the student health insurance requirements as well as the procedure for waiving the coverage. Additional information may also be accessed at www.wheaton.edu/healthsvcs or you may contact Karen Mulder at 630.752.5573. The Fall 2008 online waiver as well as the 2008-09 benefits brochure will soon be available at the above site.

Edman Chapel

In the 1960s the Alumni Association took the lead in the funding drive to construct Edman Chapel, pledging $500,000. The class of 1935 gave specifically to construct the chapel stage’s twelve-foot extension that can be raised to platform level to accommodate major symphony orchestras. The class of 1962 provided the lighted spire with its four-faced clock. The Chapel was built to accommodate 1,000 more seats than needed at the time. Today every seat is filled during student chapel services.
