Dean's List and Commencement Press Releases
Making the Dean's List or earning a diploma is a proud moment for any parent. If your student has earned the right to be called a Dean's List scholar or a graduate of Wheaton College this past semester, and you would like to share the news, visit http://www.wheaton.edu/news/release-request.html.
The Media Relations office at Wheaton College has posted a quick form there, which will be used to create a press release written specifically about your student. Parents, you may then forward the press release on to your local media outlets for coverage.
Questions? Email the Media Relations office at Media.Relations@wheaton.edu.

The Internship Imperative
For today’s graduates, internships are no longer an option. Over 77% of all college graduates will have had at least one internship, while 60% of that figure will have had more than one. Employers universally agree that an internship experience will trump GPA. Why? Because it reflects a student’s ability to take their classroom experience and extend it into a work arena. It proves to the employer that not only can that student think and but they can also do!
The definition of an internship that I like to use is “a work experience that provides meaningful, career-related exposure that extends a student's learning beyond the classroom.” An internship may be paid, unpaid, or for credit, but the most important payback is that it provides a meaningful, career-related experience that extends learning beyond the books.
As liberal arts graduates, internships take on even more value because it provides a practical application to the rigorous academic experience, thereby proving to employers that have what it takes to work in their organizations.
Upcoming Career Services Events:
CareerFest 2008
Were you aware that Wheaton College participates in a CareerFest every year? Your student can have access to 125 national and local recruiters in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors. Cost is $20 at the door and $10 if the student registers by January 25th. Encourage your junior and senior students to participate. It’s a great learning experience and can’t help but start them thinking about their future.
Life 101
Career Services designed the Life 101 “curriculum” to equip students for Life after Graduation. Events include: Managing your Finances and Debt, Your First 90 Days on the Job, Deciphering your Health and Retirement Plans & the ever popular Etiquette Dinner. All students and alumni are invited to attend.
For more information, contact Ita Fischer, Director of Career Serivces at 630-752-5048.

TAKE
NOTE
Advancement Associates

Wheaton College Advancement Associates are student volunteers who serve the Advancement Office, the Wheaton Associates program, and the College as a whole. They communicate the student perspective to our alumni, parents, and friends as they represent Wheaton at various functions on campus and around the country. They also assist the Wheaton Associates and Wheaton Fund office by writing thank-you letters to those who so generously and faithfully give to the Wheaton Fund and pray for the College.
We value their tremendous work as volunteers and want to take this opportunity to publicly say a very warm “thank you!” to these students.
Following is an excerpt from a recent letter written by Sarah Jahns, Class of 2009
“…It is a real honor to be here, and I know for a fact that Wheaton would not be half the place it is without your support through prayer and donations. As a current student I can say that I see the first hand effects of your generosity and I know that in my years following Wheaton, I too will give to the place that has given so much to me.”

Financial
Aid
Is your son or daughter currently receiving financial aid? If so, remind him or her to watch for a January e-mail from the Financial Aid office. This e-mail will alert students to important financial aid information for the 2008-09 academic year. If your family will be applying for 2008-09 financial aid, we strongly suggest that you complete your 1040 tax form first to ensure that the figures will be accurate. The FAFSA processor will calculate financial need based on estimated figures; however, a financial aid award will not be made for those students until the complete 1040 is received in the Financial Aid office (with the correct figures), plus a completed Verification Worksheet.
PLUS (previously called Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students) loans are still available to help with the coming spring term costs. You may contact the lender directly to apply for the loan. A list of lenders is available on our website at www.wheaton.edu/finaid. If you have questions, contact us at 800/364-2674, or by e-mail at finaid@wheaton.edu.
