HEADLINERS
Prayer for NIU
On Thursday, February 14, Northern Illinois University (DeKalb) experienced one of the worst tragedies we can imagine. A gunman entered a lecture hall, killing seven people including the gunman himself, and injuring 15 others.
At this time, we are asking parents to join with the campus community in prayer for the entire NIU family-for the families and friends of those injured or killed, for the faculty and staff, and for their campus community as a whole.
Be assured Wheaton has not received any threats. However, the Public Safety department is fully on alert. Additionally, the Counseling Center is open to all of your sons and daughters who may feel they need help in dealing with grief over this incident.

Thank you to our 2007-2008 Parents Council

Earlier this month the Wheaton College Parents Council gathered for their third and final meeting of the academic year, and said goodbye to five of our graduating families:
Mark '79 and Sarah '80 Bradley, Wheaton, IL
Ted '70 and Angie George, Potomac, MD (2007-08 Chair couple)
Jack and Nahid Hotchkiss, Littleton, CO
Russell and Ruth Pulliam, Indianapolis, IN
Paul and Debi Winter, Mission Hills, KS
Our deepest thanks to these families for their years of leadership, insight, and service on the Parents Council. In addition to their role as liaisons between Wheaton parents and administration, members assist in planning and running Parents Orientation and Family Weekend, host Summer Socials and other regional events, and commit themselves to regular prayer for the Wheaton College community.

Ask the Career Director
Director of Career Services, Ita Fischer, answers questions from parents.
Dear Ita:
What kind of part time work will augment a résumé?
When looking for a part-time job, assess the type of experience that can be gained from the opportunity. Whether you are waiting tables, providing clerical support, or selling product ask yourself “What am doing that a future employer would value?” Unpack your job description and hold it up against the list of Top 20 Qualities that Employers Seek (available at Career Services Office). The top five qualities are Communication Skills, Honesty/Integrity, Teamwork Skills, Relational Skills and Work Ethic. Notice that Major is not on that list and that GPA is listed at #17 and only as a factor of work ethic!
When an employer looks at your résumé, they are mining it for nuggets of experience that you have collected during your “work” experience. You can gain valuable experience from unpaid opportunities; you can gain valuable experience from salaried positions. Recruiters look equally favorably on extra-curricular activities especially those in leadership and team athletics because it translates to initiative, teamwork and work ethics.
When recruiters are looking to fill entry-level jobs they are not looking for people with experience in that field or position. College recruiters assume you don’t have a lot of experience! What they are determining is if you have the raw abilities to succeed in that position: whether you communicate and work well with your team members; whether you learn quickly and work hard.
If you are looking for a job that can translate into future experience and earning money is not a factor, consider interning or volunteering. You can then supplement the unpaid experience you gain with one of the myriad of possibilities including babysitting, leaf raking, dog sitting or other miscellaneous community opportunities on our website: www.wheaton.edu/career. Some of those pay up to $25 per hour!
If you’ve got a question you want answered in this newsletter, send Ita a note at Ita.Fischer@wheaton.edu.

Wheaton Fund: Take Advantage of Matching Gift Opportunities
Every size gift is even BIGGER when matched by your employer through a corporate matching gift program.
DID YOU KNOW?
• Wheaton College relies on unrestricted giving to the Wheaton Fund to help keep Wheaton affordable for all students.
• Last year Wheaton received 240 matching gifts totaling more than $400,000!
• Your corporate matching gift will double, triple, or even more!—the impact of your gift to Wheaton.
• Matching Gifts count toward your cumulative giving to Wheaton College and may be applied toward your Wheaton Associates commitment.
• Your gift may be matched even thought it has already been given.
Each year, thousands of dollars in corporate matching gift dollars go unused, so take advantage of this opportunity. Find out if one of your company’s benefits is a corporate match.

Financial
Aid
Is your son or daughter applying for financial aid for the 2008-09 school year? Please encourage him or her to do so after your family has completed the 1040 tax form to avoid being put into verification.
New for 2008-09: Wheaton's Institutional Application can be submitted online at www.wheaton.edu/finaid. It is suggested that returning students and parents complete the forms in April. Funds will be awarded beginning in May. Prior to the month of May, newly accepted students, who need to respond to their offer of enrollment by May 1, are given priority consideration in making awards.
All accepted students have a Banner Web PIN number. By accessing Banner Web, students are able to see if their paperwork has been filed correctly, and will be alerted if documents are missing. Additional forms may be required after the FAFSA has been received, so Banner Web should be checked periodically.
When a financial aid award has been made, an e-mail will be sent to the student directing them to Banner Web. If changes occur after the award has been made, students will again be notified by e-mail to look in Banner Web for the change. It is very important for students to check their Wheaton College e-mail and/or Banner Web account every few days. Students who are away over the summer should access their accounts via the internet.
If you have questions, contact us at 800-364-2674, or by e-mail at finaid@wheaton.edu.

Student Health Services
If you have new health insurance since the beginning of the school year, be sure to update that information on your student's online waiver. Please call 1-800-437-6448, ext. 10 or 11 with the new information, and the waiver will be updated with the correct information.
Also if your student is no longer carrying at least 12 credit hours, they may no longer be eligible for coverage under your plan. Please check with your insurance company regarding the full-time student requirements to make sure benefits are still available. If you have questions regarding this, please call Karen at 630-752-5573.
Student Health Services (SHS) is located at the Wyngarden Health Center, situated on the campus in the “Quad." SHS is available to all students enrolled in classes at Wheaton College, regardless of insurance. Walk-in visits to see a nurse are free of charge. A nurse must be seen before seeing a medical provider. There are five medical providers available for appointments for a fee of $20.00.
We welcome Dr. Joy Madison to our staff. She practiced in the Glen Ellyn area for many years before serving in Ghana for the last 7 years.
Massage therapy for low cost is available for female students. Parents may call SHS to buy a gift certificate for a massage session for their daughter. A registered Dietician is available for appointments on Saturdays. Please call SHS at 630-752-5072 for an appointment.
SHS hours are Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Saturday 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Nurses are on call all other hours and can be reached for an emergency by dialing Public Safety.
SHS offers a variety of low cost services:
•Laboratory services

February is the highest incidence month for influenza (flu). Flu shots are still available at SHS for only $20.00 (billed to the student account). Please remember that the flu shot takes 2 weeks before giving a person protection from influenza. For more information about the flu (influenza) and the vaccine, access www.cdc.gov/flu.
If a student is traveling with a Wheaton College sponsored trip they may use the SHS Travel Clinic. A travel consultation will assess vaccination status, antimalarials and antidiarrheals that are country and person specific. The consultation fee is $20.00 + immunization fees. Please call for an appointment.

Thursday, February 7 was Tuition Freedom Day. On this day, nearly 900 students came through the Beamer Center to write a note of thanks toWheaton College donors. Tuition Freedom Day symbolically represents the “two-thirds point” in the academic year when tuition dollars stop covering the cost of each student’s education, and the generous support of alumni, parents, and friends who make contributions to the Wheaton Fund begins covering the final one-third.
