December 2007

DrLitfin
Christmas teaches us of God’s mysterious ways with the world. In this most momentous of events, God Himself joins the created order - by being born in a stable, to an unmarried teenage girl, raised in a working class family in a no-account town. Or again, the very Hosts of Heaven are sent to announce His birth - to the lowest rung on the social ladder, shepherds gathered on a midnight plain. What’s the lesson? As the Apostle informs us, God delights in using what the world considers insignificant to achieve His purposes (1 Cor. 1:27-28). Let us all look into the mirror this Christmas and rejoice anew that he does! “O come, let us adore Him, Christ, the Lord!”

Dr. Duane Litfin, President

Consider a Year-End Gift to the Wheaton Fund

Did you know that last year in the month of December alone, Wheaton parents and alumni contributed more than $1.8 million to the unrestricted Wheaton Fund? It was a record breaking December. We count on these gifts to help meet fiscal year goals—but more importantly, to help Wheaton College stand strong in fulfilling it’s nearly 150 year-old mission.

Dr. Litfin wrote in a recent letter to the Wheaton College family, “The content of our curriculum has obviously evolved through the years, but what has not changed is Wheaton’s commitment to Christ and his kingdom. This is what drives our ongoing concern for others, our commitment to academic excellence, and our desire to share the Gospel with a needy world.”

Thank you for your faithful stewardship to the Christ-centered mission of Wheaton College this December.  To receive a 2007 tax-deductible receipt when giving by credit card, you may give online at www.wheaton.edu/giving  through 11:59pm Monday Dec 31, 2007 or you may phone 1-800-525-9606 with your credit card gift through 5pm (CST) Monday Dec 31, 2007.

TAKE NOTE

Financial Aid

Financial aid application time will be approaching soon. Priority deadline for submission of the FAFSA and institutional application is April 15, 2008. When you complete the 2008-09 FAFSA after January 1, we strongly encourage you to have completed your 2007 IRS 1040 tax form first so the figures used will be accurate. If you complete the FAFSA based on tax estimates, the processor will make the calculations based on estimated figures, but your FAFSA will be selected for verification. This means that a financial aid award cannot be made for your student until the actual 1040 tax forms for parents and students, plus an additional Verification Worksheet, is received in the Financial Aid office and any needed corrections made.

Parents may still apply for a PLUS loan to help with spring term costs for their undergraduate students. Go to the Financial Aid website at www.wheaton.edu/finaid to view details and to print out the form requesting a loan. Complete the form and send it to 501 College Avenue, Wheaton, IL 60187, or fax it to us: 630.752.5413. If you have questions, contact the Financial Aid office at 800.364.2674, or by e-mail at finaid@wheaton.edu.

krispysnowman

Wheaton's food services provider, BonAppetit, created this 4-foot snowman out of Rice Krispies to bring a bit of Christmas cheer to Anderson Commons. Below it stands a friendly warning that reads: "Dear students: I have come from far away to be with you. Please do not touch me or try to eat me. Just admire my beauty. Thanks. Frosty the Snowman."

This year's creation continues a BonAppetit tradition of displaying edible holiday décor. Frosty is made of 250 pounds of dry cereal and melted marshmallows and is held together with a metal stick that acts as the figure's spine.
