The Wheaton College Symphony Orchestra will perform The Planets by Gustav Holst in conjunction with a multi-media show created by award winning astronomer and videographer José Francisco Salgado. The performance takes place at 8 p.m. Saturday, October 5 and serves as a finale to a weekend of Wheaton College homecoming events.
The Planets is a suite of seven orchestral movements by British composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. Now, astronomer Dr. José Francisco Salgado, an Emmy-nominated astronomer and science visualizer at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, has produced seven high-definition videos to accompany live performances of the popular orchestral suite. Each video includes awe-inspiring images of the featured planet, historical illustrations from the Adler Collection of Works on Paper, NASA and ESA animations, as well as animations produced by Dr. Salgado. The videos follow the tempo and tone set by the music.
The Wheaton College Symphony Orchestra is an 80-member orchestra consisting of students majoring in music as well as other disciplines. They are directed by conductor Daniel Sommerville, Associate Professor of Orchestral Music & Conducting. Mozart's Symphony No. 36 is also on the evening’s program.
The concert will be held in Edman Memorial Chapel. The Chapel is located on the northeast corner of Washington and Franklin streets in Wheaton (campus map). The cost is $6 for general admission or $4 for students and seniors (60+). Tickets will be available at the door only.
