The Billy Graham Center Museum at Wheaton College features an encore presentation of one of the most-requested art exhibits displayed in the museum, The Life of Christ: The Drawings of Robert Doares.
The exhibit includes 49 pencil drawings and five oil paintings on texturized masonite panels. All depict scenes from the life of Christ.
Doares’ works are known for their intricate detail and depth of expression. In addition, they are the result of an intense research process that incorporated a historical and documentary approach with a Christian perspective. Doares’ background research included study of archaeological materials and his own research in Israel.
“Robert gave extraordinary effort to portraying Christ accurately in His Jewish cultural and geographical settings,” says Christian Sawyer, museum coordinator of the Billy Graham Center Museum. “In the past, visitors have greatly enjoyed seeing the minute detail he put into these drawings. Jesus lived in a very physical landscape, with so much life going on around Him, and that’s reflected in these works.”
The temporary exhibit is appearing for the sixth time since 1992 in response to visitor requests. It is on loan to the museum from Good News Publishers in Wheaton.
Doares, a commercial and fine artist, produced the majority of the works in the series between 1978 and 1991. He died in 2005.
The Life of Christ: The Drawings of Robert Doares opened Tuesday, June 23, and will be on display through February 16, 2010. Museum hours are Monday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Sunday, 1:00-5:00 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $4 for general admission, $3 for students and seniors, $1 for children under twelve and $10 for families.
