October 25-26, 2007
Members of the community are invited to Wheaton College’s Philosophy Conference, October 25-26. This year’s conference is “Cosmopolis or Ghettos: What Comes after Modernity?”
Nationally known philosophers will address challenging questions surrounding the issues of what it means to be in a “post-modern” society. They will debate the theory of “ghettoization,” in which there can only be relatively closed communities, to the ideas of “universalism” or “liberalism,” which include a reworking of the features of modernity. Philosophers will also look for more options, and question the future of philosophy, theology and contemporary politics.
Philosophers presenting at the conference include:
- William Desmond, University of Leuven (Belgium)
- Gary Gutting, University of Notre Dame
- Eugene McCarraher, Villanova University
- Thomas A. McCarthy, Yale University
- Hent de Vries, Johns Hopkins University
- Graham Ward, University of Manchester
Those interested in attending the conference should contact the Department of Philosophy at 630.752.5040 or visit www.wheaton.edu/Philosophy to obtain schedule and registration information. Registration and lectures will be held in Barrows Auditorium, located in the east wing of the Billy Graham Center at 500 College Avenue in Wheaton.
Wheaton College (Wheaton, Ill.) is a coeducational Christian liberal arts college noted for its rigorous academics, integration of faith and learning, and consistent ranking among the top liberal arts colleges in the country.
