Dr. Grant Wacker, professor of church history at Duke University Divinity School, will present a lecture and discussion titled “Billy Graham as a Public Figure” at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 11, 2007.
As a leading historian of American History, Dr. Wacker will be sharing
research and analysis from his soon to be released biography on the same topic. Wacker received his bachelor's degree from Stanford University and earned a Ph.D. in religion at Harvard University, where he was a Kent Fellow and a Charles Wilson Fellow, in 1979. He joined the Divinity School faculty after teaching in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1977-1992. Among his special interests are the history of evangelicalism, Pentecostalism, and world missions. He is the co-editor or author of several books, including the award winning Heaven Below: Early Pentecostals and American. Professor Wacker has served as a senior editor of the quarterly journal, Church History: Studies in Christianity and Culture.
Rev. Dr. Billy Graham is a 1943 alumnus of Wheaton College. He served on Wheaton’s Board of Trustees for 27 years, and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Wheaton in 1956.
A question and answer time will follow the lecture. There will also be a display of rare documents and photographs illustrating Graham’s life and ministry.
The lecture is sponsored by the Billy Graham Center Archives, which has tens of thousands of documents about the life and ministry of Billy Graham. The free event takes place in Room 307 of the Billy Graham Center located at 500 College Avenue in Wheaton.
