Celebrate Africa!/Jabulani Afrika!

A one day symposium titled “Celebrate Africa!/Jabulani Afrika!” will be presented Saturday, September 22, through the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music and the George V. Kirk Endowed Fund for Ethnomusicology. The day will emphasize Africa’s Christian witness in music.

The schedule includes the following sessions:

9:00 am: “Africa’s Christian Witness in Kenyan Music” with Roberta King, Fuller Seminary

9:45 am: “Africa’s Christian Witness in Cameroonian Music” with Brian Schrag, Summer Institute of Linguistic

11:00 am: “Africa’s Christian Witness in Ghanaian Music” with Daniel Avorgbedor, Ohio State University

2:00 pm: Roundtable discussion with presenters

3:00 pm: African Drum Circle

All sessions are free and open to public. Lunch at the campus cafeteria can be purchased for $7. The lectures and roundtable will be held in Anderson Commons, South Party Room. The drum circle will be held in the Franklin Mall, or in McAlister Hall, Room 136 if it rains. For more information, call 630.752.5099.

The events will culminate in the Artist Series performance of Ladysmith Black Mambazo at 7 pm in Edman Memorial Chapel, located on the northeast corner of Washington and Franklin streets in Wheaton. Tickets range from $31 to $48. Discounts are available for seniors (60+), students, and groups of 20 people or more.
