September 11 artifacts from the Hastert Papers at Wheaton College to go on display

For the first time, a collection of memorabilia from the September 11 tragedies will go on display at Wheaton College. The artifacts are part of the J. Dennis Hastert Papers, donated to the College earlier this year. Included in this special display will be several books of condolences from Britain’s House of Commons and the European Union Parliament, along with some photos from the collection.

Condolence books from the House of Commons and the EU Parliament--part of the Hastert Papers collection--will be on display at Wheaton College for a special September 11 collection."With the addition of the Dennis Hastert Papers to Wheaton College, the Special Collections has materials that can be considered national treasures,” says David Malone, Head of Archives and Special Collections at Wheaton College. “Nothing is as defining for this generation as the tragedies of September 11, 2001 and what the Hastert Papers contains are the expressions of grief and support from around the world to the citizens of the United States. These books of condolence are an intimate look into our nation's history and the Wheaton College Special Collections welcomes the opportunity to share them briefly with the public."

The display opens Saturday, September 8, and is free and open to the public. The display will be in the Special Collections Reading Room, located on the third floor of the Billy Graham Center, on the campus of Wheaton College, 500 College Avenue in Wheaton. The hours of operation for the Special Collections Reading Room are Monday-Thursday, 8 am to 8 pm; Friday, 8 am to 5 pm; Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm.

Wheaton College (Wheaton, Ill.) is a coeducational Christian liberal arts college noted for its rigorous academics, integration of faith and learning, and consistent ranking among the top liberal arts colleges in the country.
