With football season fast approaching, athletic trainers at Wheaton College are partnering with Public Safety and the City of Wheaton Fire Department to prepare for possible spinal injuries.
On Tuesday, August 14, between 10-11 a.m., a drill will be held on the McCully Football Field. Wheaton Fire, Public Safety and the Wheaton athletic training staff will all get notice a football player is down with a possible spine injury and needs immediate response. The teams will respond as if this is a real injury.

Head Athletic Trainer Greg Evans says the drill will help all area football players. “The techniques we are practicing will help the fire department respond to emergencies not just at Wheaton College, but at other junior highs, high schools and colleges in the area.”
To prepare for the drill, the athletic trainers held a three day in-service with the Wheaton Fire Department August 6-8. Trainers showed firemen spine board techniques, as well as new changes in the football equipment. The firemen demonstrated the new “Reeve Sleeve,” a cocoon-like tool designed to immobilize a patient before strapping him or her to a back board.
Local media are invited to attend the drill. For more information or to schedule interviews, please call Sarah Clark, Director of Media Relations at 630.752.5714.
