The Artist Series at Wheaton College presents two performances of Hector Berlioz’s Requiem, Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19. This concert of extraordinary scope and scale features 400 voices and 111 instrumentalists under the direction of conductor John Nelson. Lyric Tenor John Tessier will be the featured soloist.

Conductor John Nelson will lead the following music groups to produce a performance of one of the 19th century’s most extraordinary scores.

  • Wheaton College Symphony Orchestra – directed by Daniel Sommerville.
  • Wheaton College Concert Choir – directed by Paul Wiens, Berlioz Requiem choirmaster.
  • Wheaton College Men’s Glee and Women’s Chorale – directed by Mary Hopper.
  • Apollo Chorus of Chicago – directed by Stephen Alltop.
  • Valparaiso University Chorale & Bach Choir – directed by Christopher Cock.
  • Northern Illinois University Chorus – directed by Eric Johnson.

This event will be performed in memory of the five fallen NIU students.

The music
Hector Berlioz’s Requiem is set in Latin text for the Mass for the Dead. Berlioz took liberties with the traditional piece, moving around parts of the lyrics to create a vibrant and interesting reinterpretation. The work was written for a massive orchestra and chorus. In its original performance, there were 400 singers and players total assembled.

The conductor
The distinguished American conductor, John (Wilton) Nelson, is one of the world's most versatile and accomplished conductors. He is particularly noted as a great interpreter of large Romantic works, for his performances of opera – in particular the operas of Berlioz – and for his vibrant and stylish performances of Baroque music. Nelson studied at Wheaton College and with Morel at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Nelson regularly conducts in virtually all the major cities throughout the world.

The soloist
On the international stages of opera, concert, and recital, Canadian John Tessier has gained attention and praise for the beauty and honesty of his voice, for a refined style and artistic versatility, and for his youthful presence in the lyric tenor repertoire.
