The State Symphony Orchestra of Mexico comes to Wheaton

The Artist Series at Wheaton College presents the State Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, featuring guitar soloist Alfonso Moreno, in concert at 8 pm Friday, February 29. Conducting the orchestra is its founder Enrique Bátiz.

The State Symphony Orchestra of Mexico was founded in 1971 with the intent of creating union and identity among the citizens of Mexico. It also served to promote numerous new musical talents throughout its existence.

Enrique Bátiz began his career as a pianist. He has guest conducted more than 500 orchestras around the world, and is considered one of Latin America’s most highly respected musicians. Bátiz has been described as an artist who conducts with enthusiasm, expressing a deep understanding, unusual even among the finest conductors. Throughout his career, he has received important distinctions and awards including the Estado de Mexico prize for his contribution to the musical culture of the State of Mexico. Throughout the country and world he has been declared “Mexiquense Destacado,” which translates to “outstanding Mexican”.

Alfonso Moreno began his musical studies at the age of four. He went on to achieve degrees in violin, composition, conducting, and guitar. In 1968, he won first place in the Paris International Guitar Competition and is now one of the greatest interpreters known to the world of classical guitar. His repertoire ranges from ancient music to music by contemporary composers.

The concert is supported by Presenting Partner McCormick Tribune Foundation and Associate Concert Partner JPMorgan Chase Bank. It will be held in Edman Memorial Chapel, located on the northeast corner of Washington and Franklin streets in Wheaton (campus map).

Individual tickets range from $31 to $48. Discounts are available for seniors (60+), students, and groups of 20 people or more. To reserve your seats, contact the Ticket & Information Office at 630.752.5010 or www.artistseries.org. Online orders may be placed through Wednesday, February 27.
