Artist Series presents The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and The Band of the Coldstream Guards

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and The Band of the Coldstream Guards join in a performance of pipe and drum, presented by The Artist Series at Wheaton College at 8 p.m. Thursday, February 7.

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards can claim to be the oldest surviving Cavalry of the Line in the British Army. The guards perform in full dress and maintain an extremely high musical standard. They are also all regular soldiers who crew tanks as well as play instruments. They served with distinction in the Gulf Conflict and more recently in Bosnia and Kosovo. Though horses have been replaced by tanks and armoured cars, it is the cavalry spirit of the past which provides the inspiration for the future of the regiment, and its music.

The Band of the Coldstream Guards has provided more than 200 years of continuous service, distinguishing it as one of the oldest Military Bands worldwide. Formed in 1650, The Coldstream Regiment originally hired a group of eight civilian musicians to provide music for the Changing of the Guard at St. James' Palace. Today the band includes 49 musicians, who apart from "doubling" on other instruments, are medical assistants who serve as stretcher bearers and field hospital assistants.

This Artist Series event features traditional marches, historical to the armed forces of Great Britain and Scotland. The bands will also perform a tribute to America’s regimental music. It’s a treat for the eyes as well as the ears, as the guards don their traditional red tunics and bearskin hats and march across the stage.

The concert is in partnership with McCormick Tribune Foundation, Domanada Foundation, and Savegnago Family Partnership. It will be held in Edman Memorial Chapel, located on the northeast corner of Washington and Franklin streets in Wheaton (campus map).

Individual tickets range from $33 to $53. Discounts are available for seniors (60+), students, and groups of 20 people or more. To reserve your seats, contact the Ticket & Information Office at 630.752.5010 or www.artistseries.org. Online orders may be placed through Tuesday, February 5.
