What do these rankings mean?

The U.S. News & World Report 2008 college rankings place Wheaton College 59th out of more than 266 schools in the Best Liberal Arts category.

We are in good company with other schools that U.S. News & World Report classifies as Best Liberal Arts Colleges, which offer exemplary undergraduate programs that focus on broad learning. Wheaton and these other colleges and universities emphasize undergraduate education and award at least half their degrees in the arts and sciences. Most are private institutions, but 27 are public. Because of the strong liberal arts emphasis at Wheaton, you will not find us ranked among Midwestern schools called Best Baccalaureate (By Region)--a category designed for schools who award more degrees in professional fields than liberal arts.

Why do we not show up in top 50 every year, with our outstanding student body and strong educational program? The answer is complex, but the best short response is this: According to most of U.S. News & World Report's measures, Wheaton ranks well up into the top 50. However, we lack the financial resources generated by the higher tuition rates (Wheaton costs almost $10,000 per year less than many of these schools) and vastly larger endowments (often three or four times greater than Wheaton's) of many of the top 50 schools. If it were not for this reality, Wheaton would appear higher up on the list every year.
